it's through hole.... might be some fun to be had. I'm part way through modding my rack mount version which I have potentially made a mess of so I'm thinking this may be something else to tamper with instead.

looks interesting, only thing I have to say is that they could at least have used a module that was properly soldered for the official pic.. ..those electrolytic caps..

Very happy with the result! Super nice guy, Jim might be able to help you out of your jam.

that formed my template. unfortunately I lifted a trace in the power supply. I fixed it but haven't really tested things properly yet.

Hi All,
Just a quick note to let you know these are about to start shipping. The first units built are being manufactured in North America (at ART parent company's facility, Yorkville Sound in Pickering, Ontario- just outside of Toronto). Going forward we may move production to China (where the rest of ART products are made) based on volume and how busy our plant is making PA product.
Here's a pic of some production units from yesterday right before they got packed.
Best regards,
Jeff Yorkville Sound/ART/Traynor Product Development

US Street pricing on this is $199.00 Jeff - I'm not seeing any tubes. Did I miss something? Is this a tubeless design?

No you're not blind There's no tubes. Getting a tube into a single slot design is a bit problematic. We replaced the tube with 2 solid state circuits that emulate what the tube was doing in the provla. Here's a copy and paste from another forum where I describe what the gainstages are doing: PUNCH - J-FET Harmonic Enhancer: Adds even-order harmonic distortion for a fuller, punchier sound while taming any nasty peaks that may escape the Vactrol. GRIT– Frequency-Dependent Distortion: Will add grit to your sound and make it stand out. This is a creative effect that can work great on drums, horns and most percussive instruments. You can engage one or both, and with neither button depressed you are using a cleaner opamp gain stage. If the compressor threshold is set all the way up (so effectively with zero compression) you can still process your signal through the PUNCH or GRIT circuits. The compression on the VLA-500 is very similar to the PRO-VLA but these new circuits make it have a bit of a wider tonal pallette.

Harmonic goodies aside, would you describe this in an LA3A style of camp. Or different?

It's probably closest to an LA2A as far as 'famous' compressors go (although it's not exactly like one or trying to be a clone)

I picked up a pair of these and they are very useable. I just have too many compressors for these to get used but for the price I think their legit.

I used the full sized Pro VLA II for quite some time and got good tracks from it. Pretty interested in this one! It was only a matter of time before the affordable brands got into 500 series.

I still have my racked version as well. That makes two for two (dbx 160 being the other) of useful yet affordable hardware compressors I own that are now offered in 500 format (well kinda) I have been meaning to mod my vla II as I still use it on overheads somewhat regularly and read good things about the mods bringing it to another level.
