Dear RGOs.
In the last weeks I had to do a few more mixes ITB ... because of total recall. Extensive use of of MAGIC AB taught me that you can have mixes in the box, as good as otb.
As much as I love using the EQs and sends etc. on the console....this true knob love wont make a change in the heads of those who call for changes. Its work with humans, and humans tend to love to have the feeling they are also experts in mixing music. I do those changes, even if they are stupid. I need this Job, and with this I shut up.
If the work will stay with the label, I hope so, I need to get rid of the console.
But I want to keep my outboard!! I thought about hard wiring the outboard to the interfaces, but that would cause latency problems.
A passive summing box? It should be something that ads no coloration to the sound, as neutral as it can get.
Any other hint is welcome too. Thanks for your help.
Holmes.

Are you sure about the latency? The latest thunderbolt interfaces seen to have almost none. And if all your outboard is wired in the same way, I think you could delay comp for the rest. Those settings would become recallable as part of the session. I could be totally wrong but...

Those settings would become recallable as part of the session. I could be totally wrong but... You know I said this becasue I also track with HW reverb, it makes a diffrence when the verb is in time with the song and I play into it. If you play fast on a guitar for example you can feel the latency. The more processing you have with native systems the bigger the latency gets. Everybody tells you that there will be more latecy standing a few meters away from your Amp, but this feels way diffrent than the latency in the studio. On the other hand I am very happy with my RME converters and I do not see a reason to switch conversion here. I want to get rid of the console, better monitoring options too etc.

What is your current setup? Daw?

If DAW mixes are getting you paid, I would dump all the physical outboard, buy cheap plug-in's and collect a fatter check. Downstream the MP3 files and their listeners won't care, so why should you?

I run an PT HDX system and have no issues with latency. Change up your DAW if you're having significant issues. The ONLY time I have any latency issues is if I try to parallel process an ITB track and an OTB processed track. As in compressors mostly. In that case I buy comps with blend built in, or use a "blend" box like the other thread, or use a mixer to externally blend them before bringing it back into the DAW. But in ZERO cases can I "feel" any latency. It's at most a handful of samples. It's a non issue now for mixing. The only issue is the flanging / phasing thing during mixing which I think will always exist because all you need to generate the problem is to be a sample off, and in real life there's always a "crack" hole between samples. Although higher SR's are "better" at this....

But I want to keep my outboard!! Holmes. I quote myself now!!! you said yourself that ITB is as good as OTB, why waste your time? sell your outboard gear, or better yet, give it to me for safe keeping 8)

Put some kind of an analog monitor mixer together. Digital converters alone have too much latency to not affect performances even when it isn't noticeably audible. The only other way is to have performers not use headphones.

I thought we were talking primarily about mixing.

I'm also planning a new setup, and interested in this idea.... I usually use RME totalmix for monitoring, but I'm not crazy about the workflow (and the possibility of latency). What are people doing for 100% latency free monitoring while recording ITB with no console? I know there's different ways to accomplish this; just curious what people are doing.

you said yourself that ITB is as good as OTB, why waste your time? sell your outboard gear, or better yet, give it to me for safe keeping 8) It does not answer the problems you get staying ITB only…latency. I have personal reasons to keep some of the outbaord special for tracking. I know there are some good solutions but I never researched for it an I hope some folks know it.

I think the topic solved by itself. I thought about it again, and why changing it all.
I now ccan have all the ways OTB ITB and HYBRID…. It would be just like trading the console for something else, and I guess I would regret it one day.
Sorry I did post the question to early. Thanks anyway….

I have a question though. I track, recording myself singing, accompanying myself on acoustic guitar. my chain is: mic > outboard mic pre > outboard compressor > RME Babyface > Reaper on my laptop.
I monitor myself with headphones using TotalMix. I don't have any latency. why would you have latency? I thought the latency that I get by direct monitoring using TotalMix was so small that it was positively negligible. I have done this for many many hundreds of hours of recording in the last couple years. previous to that, I recorded for many years with no headphones.

You just have to have software that allows you to have zero latency monitoring.

You just have to have software that allows you to have zero latency monitoring. Yes the RME converters I have they can do this, but without the fx chains which I do build to get the sound I like to play with. So my dream would be to have the fxs as well without using a HD system which I cant afford yet.

Latency, is there, its just very small with total mix. If its not a problem for you, then its not a problem. Some people even pickup on the small amount of latency that total mix has... the only way to know, is to try a small mixer and monitor off that and see if its an issue for you. I am now on MOTU 16A and I monitor off it as well.. cheers Wiz

You just have to have software that allows you to have zero latency monitoring. I think I have found a solution all the playback tracks go out the mixbus 1-2 but I set a sample delay at the top for compensating the recording offset. The sw-monitoring for the overdubbing track goes out 3-4 routed together in the RME Matrix to the monitor outs Voilla..... no tracking latency anymore.....will try this tomorrow.....

I'm with Jim Williams on this one, I say go for it, I know you already decided though.
