So, I have been thinking about springing for a 47 clone for the past half year. I have a good friend who has a Voxorama (Grosser) one that gets a lot of praise. And it does sound nice. But when I set it up for an A/B test with my CV4, the difference was a lot smaller than I expected. In fact, it was miniscule. Definitely not big enough to warrant me spending that kind of money. The top end was just a tiny, tiny bit different. Not better or worse. I have been fortunate enough to have recorded with a vintage U47 on several occasions, and at first I didn't appreciate the top end being mellow. But when it came around to mixing time, it made a lot of sense, considering sibilance. Now, a proper U47 is obviously not some thing I'll ever own, but I am definitely hoping to find something close. Today I came across a post where Johnkenn was talking about his MK-U47 and the mellow top, which sounds like the thing I am after. So, I am wondering if those of you who own one could talk to me about it a little. Your experience with it, how it takes compression (sibilance), how close it is to a good original, how hard is it to build, etc.
Thank you.

This should give you a ton of info on it, search MKU47 and find John Kennedy's MKU47 build thread also realgearonline.com/post/50912/thread

tonycamphd - I sold my CV4, so I'm pulling the trigger on a Shannon capsule for it...really looking forward to seeing how it sounds with this build.

yeah - it does...I'm really just hoping to really tailor it to my voice...I can always put the blueline back in, or have it as a separate head.
