I've been using a Lola as my recording DI, which is great, but options are good... www.rupertneve.com/products/rndi/"The class-A and discrete FET amplifier in the RNDI is powered by industry-standard 48V phantom power on the XLR connection, and creates a very high impedance input of 2M Ohms that ensures consistent performance with a wide variety of instruments. The significance of the RNDI’s class-A design is that there is no crossover distortion added to the signal, which can add upper order odd harmonics to the sound that are musically dissonant in nature. With the RNDI, the overwhelming majority of harmonic content is 2nd order (octave) with some 3rd order present (fifth above octave). These musically relevant harmonics – present in subtle amounts – actually add to the richness of the original signal. The discrete aspect of the RNDI design means there are no ICs or digital components that can have negative effects on the tone." This video compares the RNDI with some of your typical popular DIs (radial, countryman). The RNDI definitely has a nice fattening effect, and some harmonic coloration. Not at all a 'clean' DI. www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10153079989516940&video_source=pages_finch_main_videoAt $269 the price is fairly comparable to the higher end Radial's, so I might pick one up soon... wish I could see the guts.

That looks like a real multi-tool. Very interesting!

This might be a dumb question, but would would I want to use this when I can plug a guitar/bass into the Hi-Z input of any preamp, my TG2 or BAE 1028, for example?

Haven't looked at the circuit of the boxes you listed but often the Hi-Z / DI input on a preamp is more about feature than sound! A good DI will let you get a great sound out of any of your preamps.

I have one! I like it. I was pretty scared the first time I put it in Speaker mode behind 400 tube watts, but its worked without a hitch.
I will provide more clips for comparison but here is one I did to get one of the sounds im liking so far... Pick->Hamer Jazz-->Trace elliot V6-->RNDI--CAPIVP28-->RME multiface
Be aware that I play the 4 open strings at the end of the clip at a louder volume.

Heres some more samples, this time its a p bass with flats, fingerstyle, direct into the RNDI->CAPIVP28->RME multi
https%3A//soundcloud.com/jfoc-1/pbass-rndi
and here is a G&L asat (tele) both pickups into the rndi
https%3A//soundcloud.com/jfoc-1/tele-rndi-1 Please excuse my mediocre playing. I find this DI imparts a bit of warmth & roundness. I haven't used the reamp function yet, but its been worth it to me to get a DI signal that captures my bass amps output transformer & power tubes. I'd love to hear what it sounds like with a SVT, Hiwatt, Sound City, Orange or other large tube amp
