pace, i can't comment on the sound of this, as i have no personal experience with it, but peter is a beast of an audio electronics guy, i believe marakat has one of his la3a 500 compressors that he thinks sounds better than a lot of others he also has, check the groupdiy threads on it, you'll get the gist there.

I have a pair of his LA3A-500's. hard to build, hard to get support (peter even says he's the worst at offering support). There was a dude on GroupDIY who built 16 of 'em or 24 of 'em and have them in his console. I think it was StrangeWeather or somethin' like that. he had pics tho. check the build thread for it, cuz he posted pics.

Just wanted to add that a MUUUUCH better kit and easier build is Colin's ez1073. audiomaintenance.com has the full kit, and you can get cases from Dan Deurloo. Dan can also vouch for how great they sound compared to the vintech x73's, which is a commercial 1073 clone.

I'd like to build some of these. After I get my dBDawg CEQ set settled, anyway! Attractive project, for sure. I'm looking at the AML kits, too.

I have all the above and the laz1084's get used the least. They do sound great but I prefer the ez1084 for most things and the ez1073 gets used a lot with the preamps. So I would suggest both of those over the Laz1084's. Drip pultecs rule as well. |
