I had an 001 first and I swear it sounded better than the 002. That goes back some years, but I think I would rather do work on Adats than use an 002. I have used the 002 with an analog board and it sounded much better summing the outputs. It's all good.

It's not officially supported, but avid doesn't even support "officially supported" stuff haha. As far as the 002 modded up, its a very, very good unit.

I had the full Signature Mod done on my 003 and it definitely improved it but the stock Apollo beat it handily to my ears (I compared the two for a week).
Granted the 003 is different. But BLA guys have said they think the 002 is a better unit stock or modded.
It's not something I'd sink a bunch of coin into myself at this stage in the game but YMMV. Perhaps they'll keep working without PT support.
They describe all their mods in their site. Power supply, clock, decoupling, op amps, etc.
If you want a BLA 002, I'd check around for a used one. They're worth next to nothing stock these days and modded ones can be had for significantly less than the price of the mod if you can find one.

Does anyone know what they did for the mod? blacklionaudio.com/product/digi-002r/I have the signature mod with the FM clock, it's absurdly good, if i was a singer songwriter in need of no more than 10 channels, my search would have ended with this, I've shot it out against some pretty big hitters, and it won easily IMO, they are charging an insane amount more $ for the new XB mod now, i don't get why? sounds very steep, but I guess that mod is based on Tony Maserati's "God Mod". Don't forget Mike Shipley recorded Alison Krauss "Paper Airplane" with FM modded BLA 192. They are killer, i can't imagine how good the XB mod must be?

Ragan, I mean no offense by this, but I'm surprised you saw the Apollo vs BLA 003 that way, i've never heard a mix on one of those(even modded) that didn't have that signature murky apollo sound? It's totally inescapable to my ears, and i'm not a fan of it.., i guess some people may equate that to analog? Of course opinions are like ... ..... haha. I probably wouldn't get one of these now either.... well, like I said, if i was a 10 track total guy i would get one used, and just stick with PT12 for a bunch of years. I might be selling my FM002 once the RM stuff shows up? but i may just hang on to it for some location type stuff? As far as BLA, I don't think they offer the FM mod normally, I was tight with JD who hooked me up with it, he's moved on from there now.

My BLA 003 sounded more veiled than the Apollo. Apollo's transients were more nuanced and the general sonics sounded less bandwidth limited. I might have a different impression now but that was how it struck me then.

I had the bla mod for my apollo and it came back much more linear and true/flat.
It seems that UA has integrated some of the bla mod in the redesign of the new BFapollo, (upgraded analog parts, decoupled converters).

Thanks. That is now in the test. So I have that and tony's modded FM 002. Interesting results. I wanted to do that for all the BLA haters. There are differences for sure and that is across only 2 channels. I am not sure what the original was recorded with. It was just a song I was using when I started comparing all these converters to each other and its nice to keep it the same so I have good head to head comparisons. The funny thing is not one of the sets of converters I have tested yet come back the same as the original file. So if the goal is transparent then everyone is failing. I am trying to get my mastering buddy to run the song through some of his super highend stuff and see how it comes back. Thanks again.

I tried to null the two files and it sounds like you loose 25% of the frequencies . If anyone says that BLA does nothing they have no idea what the hell they are talking about . This comparison is not a subtle difference . I think the 002's biggest weakness is the A/D . I use my 002 as a Pro Tools Dongle , I run through the ADAT and S/PDIF inputs .
