..but I'll ask nonetheless..
It's been my idea for a while to do a fake-two-mics-only recording in this way: find a very good, preferably medium-large room and place a stereo pair in a good position. Then use this pair to record each instrument/performer separately without moving the pair but moving the instrument/performer to achieve the desired spatial position.
I'm just waiting for the right act.. what do you think? Already been done? Kinda dumb and pointless?

not every instrument is gonna sound good to those mics. it's better to let the dudes play in the room first and they find the sweet spot for their instrument in the space (let 'em walk around unless it's drums), and then once they find it, stick up the mics into the room in a spot that sounds good.
but basically what you're describing is how orchestral sample libraries are made so that stage position is maintained, even tho they aren't recording an orchestra all at once.

not every instrument is gonna sound good to those mics. that's right but it's a compromise I'm ready to accept ,for the sake of the experimentation.it's better to let the dudes play in the room first and they find the sweet spot for their instrument in the space (let 'em walk around unless it's drums), and then once they find it, stick up the mics into the room in a spot that sounds good. you mean I should let the musicians find the sweet spot themselves? Without considering the final position in the stereo field?
but basically what you're describing is how orchestral sample libraries are made so that stage position is maintained, even tho they aren't recording an orchestra all at once. very interesting, I didn't know that. I've never used sampled orchestra libraries Thanks for the suggestions, please see my replies/requests in your quoted message

I've a friend who has worked some pretty big gigs - including Van Morrison and Michael Bublé. He prefers a similar method to this for singer songwriter types where he wants it to sound like a singer with a band around them. Use a stereo room + a close mic for each instrument and position them away from the singers original position to give panning and distance. I heard some and it had fantastic depth. Seemed like a hell of a track count, though!
