This looks cool..... and will apparently be inexpensive: www.diyrecordingequipment.com/blogs/news/34310148-introducing-the-cp5-mic-preamp-kit"The CP5 will be an ultra-transparent, single-channel preamp for the 500-series in beginner-friendly DIY kit form. And it will have three big features: The most affordable 500-series mic preamp on the market, bar none Stepped controls for quick recall and stereo operation Colour stage with separate gain control" It would be especially interesting to try this with the LTL Pentode or Implode modules, or any of the transformer modules.

I'm excited. I already have more colours than slots in my pallette, so this could be a nice addition.

I'd like to see an ultra clean 20db module to give a 80db preamp instead of tube and transformer plugs.

Yeah, really only needs to be fixed gain amount.
Depending on the topology of the main preamp could even be a pair of jfets or modified discrete opamps to go down the forsell sound scape.
Maybe a 2520 adaptor kit as well.

This would really be cake.. Based upon the quick schematic that Peterson posted, it looks like just pick your favorite of a hundred different ways to make some gain and put it on a colour module. Would be very low part count unless you want to get tricky.
I seem to remember that someone was looking at putting a 2520 on a module but varying height of different DOAs was a concern as you have only 1" over the PCB. Many would likely fit, though.
Get a few of those prototyping boards he sells for $2 and drop another $2 in parts on it and there you go.

I'm thinking there are others much more qualified. ?

Anyone guess the price? I really miss those old Eisen barebones kits.

Anyone guess the price? I really miss those old Eisen barebones kits. The barebones colour kit is $125, so I would guess close to that.... although I believe this is fully stepped controls, so maybe a little more? Pricing will be revealed on 7/1 when the preorder begins.

Anyone guess the price? I really miss those old Eisen barebones kits. Hey Jim You can still get them! Jens teamed up Hairball Audio to reincarnate them as the Elements series mic preamp kits. One of the kits is similar to the old DIY500. Brad

I forgot to mention... I'm working on a new Colour module (or two or three) that I think will pair up nicely with the new CP5. I have a prototype board on the way. If all goes well I should be able to launch it this summer to coincide roughly with the release of the CP5.

Anyone guess the price? I really miss those old Eisen barebones kits. Phew! Now that the preorder is live I can answer this question. The base price for the full kit is $149. We're offering some deep quantity discounts for the preorder period only, so for example you can get a set of 8 for <$1k. I'd like to see an ultra clean 20db module to give a 80db preamp instead of tube and transformer plugs. I love this idea! So I laid it out last week and ordered a prototype. If all tests well we could have it ready around the time the CP5s ship in late Sept. Yeah, really only needs to be fixed gain amount. Depending on the topology of the main preamp could even be a pair of jfets or modified discrete opamps to go down the forsell sound scape. Maybe a 2520 adaptor kit as well. Get out of my brain! This is a Colour that will drive any DOA into a little bit of distortion.

I don't need preamps at all, but these will be hard to resist, especially since I already have some Colour modules.

Very cool! Does this use detented pots or mechanical switches? Thanks! Detented pots. They have 21 detents, so there's a stop at and between each of the lines on the front panel.

yeah the filters jumped out at me as well. I hadn't seen them before either!!!!
petersongoodwyn
far out! I am so glad I bought a pair last night. hopefully made it into the first 90 as well.
you've sold me on the opamp adaptor. love it. i'll ge grabbing a couple for sure. the extra gain module as well!! extra gain with HP filter ? bang for your buck!
is there a way to wire the pot on the output into the HP filter so it becomes variable? I'm sure a few wires could mod it to do that. then i could have eisen opamp with variable HP....
really love this new gear from you Peterson!

Today my cp5 box arrived and tonight I built the first preamp in around 2 hours. yep i'm slow.
should be able to give them a spin on Saturday as I'm booked to do an EP with a band. I've pencilled the CP5 in for drum room mics. The band is talking overdubbing an acoustic for one song and if that happens i'll shootout the CP5 against the Syteks.
time will tell. first CP5 didn't blow up when I powered it up.

Finished my CP-5 build last night while watching T.V. Also built the Steezer color module that I put in it. Gonna try it out for fuzz bass and vocals.

haven't had a chance to try it yet which is painful but I do have another acoustic guitar opportunity coming up in about 2 weeks so i'll use it there. in the dead room but it is what it is.,
jimwilliams is it possible to get a drop in PIP.
I'm looking at the board and there are some big caps around the that chip which might be a problem. could you do a version with an extender?

is the 2520 module set at unity gain or is the blend knob acting like a gain stage?

is the 2520 module set at unity gain or is the blend knob acting like a gain stage? Good question. The DOA Colour has a bit of gain before the DOA to push it into saturation and then corresponding attenuation after the DOA. Then you can push it harder with the Colour knob on the CP5. The Colour control on the CP5 is actually a combined drive/trim, not a blend control. It's a dual pot that controls a gain stage before the Colour and an attenuator after so that the intensity of the Colour increases (in this case, the saturation) but the overall gain stays the same.

You can use a couple of 8 pin machine IC sockets to lift it up off the pcb. I do that to clear parts in tight layouts.
