Hey RGO -- I'm producing a pro bono EP for a very talented high school student.... My dad is a high school teacher, and this started off as a 'weekend' project for one of his students, but it's ballooned into a full scale production. And now I've got (what I expect to be) a fairly high end music video being shot in a few days. I've recently made a few arrangement changes, and I was hoping to get some feedback before we shoot the video. In particular, going into the third chorus around 2:20, the drums and bass drop out, and I want to make sure the transition feels natural. I'm starting to lose objectivity since I've heard it way too many times over the last several months.... Any other constructive feedback on the song/mix/etc would also be greatly appreciated! The song is unmastered, so turn it up! ***Files removed for now -- will update later***

That sounds great! That gives me so many "video visions". That should be a fun project to do. Look forward to hearing/seeing the finished version.

Nice mdmitch. Nice tune and arrangement. It sounds to me like the overdubs are a bit out front of the drums in spots. I'd group the drums and move them a few ticks ahead and see if that sounds better or not. A little '80's ballad snare 'verb would be cool. Nice job, overall. I like the guitars especially.

Thanks for the feedback! Regarding the overdubs, are you mainly referring to guitars being a little early or something else? As for the snare, I'll give that a try -- could be cool.

I assume you're doing all the performances. I think you're pushing the tempo a tad in spots, and the core of the song performance has become your overdubs, not the click, and the drums seem to lag a bit in spots by comparison. Make a copy of your session, and try moving the drums ahead a couple ms. It'll either work or not. I could be all wet.

You could be right on -- I've wondered if the guitar parts were a little rushed here and there, but wasn't sure since they're pretty syncopated and other listeners hadn't noticed. The only thing I'm playing is bass though -- the drums were played by another high school student, and all of the guitar parts were played by the singer/songwriter. But yeah, lots of guitar tracks and overdubs. I'll try nudging the drums a smidge and see if that makes it feel a little tighter. Good idea.

Kinda got a Ryan Cabrera thing going on there. Hadn't noticed that -- but yea, I can definitely hear it now.

If it were me, I'd take a few listens to that hit Cabrera had and then see if that gives you inspiration and direction on the things you need to do here. In my mind, I can hear the drums needing to be snapped to a grid, the kick and snare replaced and the guitars snapped around as well, singer can be loose on that one. If it was swing it'd be one thing, but he's kinda slowing down and pushing and it really is killing the flow there.

I've been resisting snapping everything to a grid since I always fear that will make things sound overproduced, but if the 'swinginess' is that apparent, it probably needs to be done. I've just heard this thing waaaay too many times, and my brain is probably snapping everything without consciously realizing.

Nice tune. For some feeback, I want the drums up and the lead guitar down in the mix. Most pop stuff like this is really driven by the drums, not guitars. I want more bottom on the kick too. Rbass or something to give it some pop on small speakers. I second donr in thinking that the snare needs to be wet. You're on the right track though.

Yea you're probably right -- I've been going back and forth between making this sound more like a radio pop song, or trying to keep it natural and focus on the talents of the singer/guitar player (he's a very decent player, especially for a 16 yr old!) I've been leaning more toward the latter, but I may need to re-evaluate that decision. Thanks for the feedback!
