HI all,
I'd like to build some gobos this summer.
I track in non-studio spaces very often (client's houses and other non conventional spaces) and would like to achieve some more "separation" when more than one performer wants to record in the same room.
I'd like to get some advice on the gobos' dimensions.
My idea would be to build three different heights, while having the same width (3.3 ft width) for portability and modularity
1) one height for the drumset: what do you reckon would be a good height for that? mind that the gobos will NOT be transparent..
2) one height for musicians sitting on chairs, what's your suggested height? (these could serve also for shielding amps maybe..)
3) one height for a singer (?) don't know really how should I play this.. since for the gobo to be effective it would cover the singer's sightline.. Maybe I should put a plexiglass window in this one? Maybe too much effort and just do without a singer's gobo.. In fact it almost never happens to me to need to record the singer with the other instruments in the same room..
what do you think?
thanks

Build frames at 4.5"d for standard 703, 4" 2x4 sizes, and devise a stacking system of building blocks, u should be able to put a single unit 4' or 2' high direction on its own, cover in material, then cut 2'x4' inserts out of 1/8" hardboard with a few Velcro tabs on one side to stick to the material if u need a relfective gobo.

I have recently built 4 for my studio. I wish I would have just bought these instead. It would have been a whole lot easier and quicker. They are certainly priced affordable compared to other companies. Check out their absorbers and diffusers in individual packages as well. hofa-akustik.de/module/mobilwand/

Range, do they ship to USA? Or do you live in Europe?

Thanks all, My attempt will definitely be in the DIY area, and in the cheap neighbor, to be more specific.. I was planning some very VERY basic structures with a thick sheet of plywood (1.5cm?) and pyramid foam on one or both sides. I currently don't think I can afford to do more. Maybe I could just use some thicker, more broad band absorber in a frame, as tonycamphd kindly suggested but I would want to use some non-rockwool material, due to toxicity concerns.

I bet one can wear it too. I don't think I can access that in Italy but I have found some suitable replacement..

tony's solution is definitely the way to go.
pyramid foam is just wasting your coin.

The pyramid foam will be completely wasting your money. There are many DIY options on YouTube to watch and do it right.

4" pyramid foam of a 2lbs+ density is good for soaking hi freq's, but not much more.

Nothing below 2K I would say. Here is a pic of the new gobos here at Slack Key. A lot of work, but they do the job! They are made with 45 degree angles, so I can wrap them around a performer or spin them around and have a straight wall. Its hard to tell in the picture, but there are 4 of them with two being ones with windows. I am ordering fabric to make some 1" panels that will velcro on the windows. They will have smaller holes to still see through the glass, but drop the glass reflection if I need it. I did put the inner glass in at angles and the outside glass is straight. It helped to cut down the glare.

They are nice and I am very happy to have them. I still have to finish them out (on the inside) with 703 and Guilford Of Maine material and they will be ready to go. If I had it to do over, I would have bought the Hofa walls, I think. I could have been tracking right away. Its good to know how to build it though. That experience bleeds over into other projects and you only get better.

I'm getting ready to build some with ultra touch and loaded vinyl I've found sheets of loaded vinyl local 2x4 for 12 dollars a sheet so I'm thinking of building 2x4 blocks that are stackable just not sure if I'm going to build them 4 inch thick or 6 inch it will be loaded vinyl in middle air gap then ultra touch. both sides then fabric cover any opinions?

Looks great! You could even mount the slip lock hinges on them to butt them tight together and be able so separate them whenever you want to as well.
