I just threw them in to sing harmonies and I think they make the Brute sound better...When I get done, I'll post two files to see if we can hear a difference. Who knows, I could be hearing things.

What comes in them? SF's 690? I have never heard one but the 690 is suppose to be stellar.

No, but it's Steve Firlotte's VF600's...

My Brute seems a little brightish...so whichever sounds darker is what I'm gonna go with.

So - here's the VP28 with both opamps...Sorry - I know you guys are sick of hearing me sing this same damn song... VP28 with Red Dots - soundcloud.com/johnandkris/vp28reddotVP28 with VF600s - soundcloud.com/johnandkris/vp28vf660I liked the Red Dots better...Seems like I like the Red Dots better in everything. The VF600's were cleaner - definitely more top. The Red Dots were definitely thicker. I'm gonna pass some signal through both amps in the brute too.

I like the red dots better, not sure if your aware, but the level with the redot is definitely louder(you can see the waveform on sound cloud is taller also)? howd you go about tracking these?
btw, I'm getting very used to ur voice singing that song, the familiarity makes it easier to hear changes with your testing.

I recorded it a little too hot in the first place, but basically, I just sang one pass, changed the opamps and sang another.

Thanks for doing the comparison John. There's definitely a difference between the two. I wonder how close the VF 600 is to the 690? I have not heard the 690 yet. The VF600 is clean and fast, what I would expect as I think the 690 is in that category? Much like a 990. For the question involving replacing a THAT 2108 with a red dot. I really don't know. I'm not familiar with the 2108. I could not find any info on it on the THAT site. Tastesliketape, if you can post a picture, I might be able to determine compatibility.

Maybe tasteliketape means 2180? That of course isn't an op amp at all, but a VCA.

Thanks for being here, Scott. sll is there any way you could do a one-off, even-thicker-than-the-red-dot? Maybe a Purple dot?

Hopefully, I'll be more active. A purple dot? That means you can only do Prince covers through it. Actually, years ago, I did a version that had more second order distortion and thickness than the red dot. I don't remember what it sounded like now. It might have went too far. I have my notes on it somewhere. I'll see if I can build one up and send it to you.

Hey John,
I found my notes and built a "purple dot." It has about 75% more second order distortion harmonics than a red dot. PM me your address and I'll mail it to you. I've not listened to it much in a critical setting. It might be going too far?
Thanks,
Scott

Wow Scott, that is interesting. Maybe that could be scaled back a bit? Just thinking out loud but say to 10 or 20% more than a red? Not sure how you are doing it.
Did your wife have purple nail polish on hand??

Hey Jeff,
It might be too much, but it's kind of a logarithmic distortion curve at the extreme high frequencies, which folds down into the audible band. It's really only the next step up in terms of slowing down the high frequency slew rate. I'll see what John thinks, I can scale it back a little, but not much.
