Man...I don't know. There's GOT to be a ceiling... I once thought that of U47s, U67s, M49s and 251s. Boy, was I wrong about that.

No ceiling if you're looking for long term investments. Not much different than vintage U47's which are priced equally as silly. But both will be worth MORE 5 years from now. If you just want the SOUND of the bluestripe, like Tony stated - Serpent SPLICE's are the way to go. They will at least hold their value compared to DIY kits which are great as long as you mod them and don't need to recoup your investment. No one pays 6 large + unless they want an investment or status symbol - neither of which have a ceiling. What happend to the 500 series version of the splice? I was thinkin about picking one up but it seems to have disappeared. For the those of you with both, how do the bluestripes/splice compare to the rev d/wa76 sound? I was hoping the wa76 would have that hard agressive sound like the plugs ive used but its not really what i had in mind. Im thinkin the splice is the ticket.

I'm not familiar with the Bluestripe's sound, so I can't comment. I will say the Warm Audio WA76 beats the $hit out of my UAD plug-ins. Way back, there were extensive files posted somewhere of almost every iteration of the 1176. It was perfectly level matched. Consensus was out of all of them, the two Urei's were best, and the WA76 took the bronze medal, topping every other brand and revision there, including UAD's.
Tony, I'm curious, how much does the Serpent Splice cost?

warrenfirehouse Martin John Butler The Serpent Splice 500 proved to be a crazy hassle to squeeze into a 500 series space, Mike retired it, and decided to put it into a standard 2 space rack and add some major quality to the rig, here's the link with the price, it looks like 2.0 is coming out! Remember it's a rev A and D in one unit, discrete class A, side chain filters, blend, send/return, stereo linkable, TRUE bypass, impedance loading, 2:1 ratio, mike went to town on this thing, and due to his monopoly on the no longer available(ask me how I know 8)NOS FET's, it's got the original vibe, it's an insane tool at any price! www.serpentaudio.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=1&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=105&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=29

do the hairball audio kits not sound like the real thing? As great as they are, the guys I know who are "in the know" and going for "clone" level of performance are doing mods to the kit.

I was hoping the wa76 would have that hard agressive sound like the plugs ive used but its not really what i had in mind. Im thinkin the splice is the ticket. There was an intimation somewhere that there was a lack of quality to the 500 series or "added quality" to the 2RU unit. This is not the case. There was no lack of quality on Mikes part on the 500 series. Basically the 500 series design BECAME the 2RU series design - with a couple of added features that Mike couldn't physically fit on the 500 series. The 500 series was pulled because the current inrush when powering up exceeded the API spec. And Mike couldn't live with that. It was also an EXTREMELY difficult build. Looking at that piece compared to ANY other 500 series pieces I have makes the others look like toys. It is dense, amazingly designed, and weighs a ton - an engineering work of art. I have a pair and I've had zero problems on power up, but Mike @ Serpent is the ultimate perfectionist. So the 500 version became extinct. I am thrilled that I have a pair of the few that exist, and they are never getting sold. The Blue Stripe emu is killer. And the ability to "mix and match" input and output topologies is unique and very cool. From my perspective, the splice absolutely does what you're looking for - in terms of an aggressive sound. It can give you a spanking. :-)

I remember it being the Urei's and the Splice and then everything else. You might be right Ric, it's been a while. I do remember how impressive it was that most everyone preferred the Warm to the UAD pieces. I remember preferring the Ureis, then the WA76, but that could just be me.

Can somebody explain to me how this version of the 1176 is so popular, can be duplicated by 3rd parties, and yet UA doesn't sell it?

Why doesn't UA sell a 175 or 176? Nobody knows. Probably wouldn't be as good as the Retro one anyway. Why doesn't Neumann come out with a U67?

Still waiting patiently! The closest I have is a U67's Korby and it does the job well. But......

Can somebody explain to me how this version of the 1176 is so popular, can be duplicated by 3rd parties, and yet UA doesn't sell it? They do sell it as a plug in! I like the midrange punch the plug in ads to sources. I was into a real one as well, but I had to learn that the plug in of UAD (LN) is in many situations to close to call the diffrence. I guess its the same with the bluey? Anyone had the chance to AB them? www.uaudio.com/blog/analog-obsession-1176-historywww.uaudio.com/blog/1176-la2a-hardware-revision-history
