They didn't buy that for actual need. That comp has became a studio status symbol of sorts. One whose status I never want to achieve.

Truly, when ti comes to putting up audio and video samples here, I SUCK HAIRY ASS.
BUT...
If you can get hold of RODA and get a pro replicas Blustripe, like I have, GET ONE OR MORE!! I know he can't use all the original logos anymore like mine, but it's still the same unit. It sounds bloody mint. I mean it's as close as you can get to an exact replica of a bluestripe and will cost you significantly less money.
I couldn't live (in the studio sense) without my 1073s, CL1b and Bluestripe as my primary vocal chain... although I do substitute an LA2a for the CL1b on more aggressive hard-rock vocals.
Nothing comes close to perfect leveling and finishing tone on a vocal like a bluestripe. Nothing.

I've commented on this concept before and it applies here. I don't think anyone buys a comp like this thinking it's going to be a silver bullet. But it is a wise investment. These vintage units will never depreciate. New gear depreciates before we get it out the door. It's like putting our money in the bank only we get the use of the wares.
Supply and demand. I put a vintage mic up on eBay and had 32 watchers, 4 offers and sold it with no haggling the same day at my terms (off eBay). Vintage gear is good business.

the blue stripe is legendary and rare as rocking horse poop, the guy made a wise investment if he has the cash.
As far as accurate clones, there is only ONE commercially available, accurate sounding rig out there as compared to the old original 1176's, and that is Mike's Serpent audio Splice(and it's not technically a clone because it's got a vastly superior feature set in conjunction with being a RevA and D in one unit), Mike bought every NOS fet in sight, and they have attributes that are not found in the new fets that are available today, his are EXACTLY like the old units, this has a significant impact on the behavior that the old rigs exhibited, if you want the original SOUND, Serpent Splice is it.

No ceiling if you're looking for long term investments. Not much different than vintage U47's which are priced equally as silly. But both will be worth MORE 5 years from now. If you just want the SOUND of the bluestripe, like Tony stated - Serpent SPLICE's are the way to go. They will at least hold their value compared to DIY kits which are great as long as you mod them and don't need to recoup your investment. No one pays 6 large + unless they want an investment or status symbol - neither of which have a ceiling.

Long term yes the sky's the limit, but the long term is a bunch of short terms and as we saw a couple of years ago a busted bubble makes it a buyers market. I also wonder about these high $ eBay sales, wouldn't you try to save the eBay and Paypal fees?

Yes. The only advantage I can see is Ebay gives you a world market, and there's a lot of forgien money. That's why you pay.
