so far the choices at the top of the list are.
Tascam dr680 - 8ch, $350 Tascam mx2424 - 12ch,$400 Zoom uac-8 - $500
all second hand. definitely second hand is my preferred option. must be capable of 96khz there are a whole bunch of options under 500 that are consumer grade and require a laptop, which I have. i also have a surface pro.
certainly don't want to discount digital mixers either.

You definitely want to be battery powered as a high priority. Otherwise at best you'll waste an immense amount of time chasing down ground loops and at worst you could easily fry the thing.
Some kind of an interface and a surface pro running waves tracks live would be a good solution. Battery powered recorders will almost all include mike inputs so there's nothing to be saved there. Beware a friend learned he hard way that MOTU has had some pretty big driver problems with windows.
Myself, I wouldn't buy anything I could easily rent unless I was using it every day.

you know, there are some pretty neat options if you go with interfaces that work with your iPad. you just gotta find that multi-track recording app and make sure your ipad is like a 32gb or higher unit. but the Orion is class compliant, i believe. Apogee Quartet... there are a bunch of others you can use.

Surface Pro (or even cheaper a Surface 3) and a motu ultralite or rme ucx. Tiny rig and all the IO you may need. The rme would give you a touch screen mixer with TotalMix. I'm a big surface pro fan. Sopwith, are you using such a rig? I think I could use a i7 powered Mac Laptop rig, I've got plenty of mix power with my thunderbolt mac laptop setup, but I don't have mutli-input capability. I use a Surface Pro with an RME Babyface when travelling because it's USB bus powered. Only 4 physical inputs, (two mono xlr, two 1/4inch), but it has adat connections so I just hook it up to a standalone converter when I need more IO. Thinking of going for a UCX, but then you need external power. Having my whole rig sit comfortably on an airline seat back tray is pretty great. The whole touchscreen thing is huge for me - I find it really hard to get my flow going writing/arranging/mixing if I have to fiddle around with a mouse the whole time. Your macbook would be great for a mobile rig, it's just down to deciding whether you want something bus powered so you can use it anywhere, or don't mind an interface with a wall wart.

Oh man this is just the biggest joy with my rig - battery powered Surface Pro, USB bus powered RME interface, NO ground loops, 100% stable drivers. The Babyface does drain the tablet's battery (~2.5 hours in high performance "fuck-my-battery-give-me-power" mode, ~4 hours in "balanced power" mode), but it's a small price to pay for not having to deal with any of that craziness.

But the babyface is only 4 channels Yep - has smux adat though. That's why I'm looking at a UCX and wondering if I can give up the USB bus power - it's just so bloody convenient while travelling.

Do you know of any rme styled interfaces with usb power?.
Could always use a 12v battery with converter.

I don't think the HD24 records standard wave files to a standard format hard drive. That's a big PITA. Not entirely True. I simply pull the hard drive caddy from my hd24 attach a USB connector to it and my MAC reads the drive as an external USB device and copies the files over lickity split. I purchased my HD24 used about 5 years ago for $600 and it hasn't blinked or hiccuped since... Very happy I went this route....
