Zoom R16 gets pretty good ratings, I have a Korg D3200 I occasionally use for mobile. It's a 32 track but it'll record 12 tracks simultaneously. Which Tascam you looking at, HS-P82?

Been looking at the dr680. Also have an mr1000 for direct to 2 track.
I don't need preamps I've got that covered. If I went down the interface path I can use my desk for monitor sends and my rma for stereo monitor.
Hiring is also a good call. Hadn't thought along those lines.

I don't think the HD24 records standard wave files to a standard format hard drive. That's a big PITA.

something else on the radar is the zoom uac-8 which is new and cheap.
has the same chip as the Apollo I think. spec seems half decent with 120db dynamic range. I wonder if it sounds any good.

I would grab a used rader II or 24! Or alesis or Tascam depending on my needs.

the mackie 1608 will only record 2 tracks (i have one) its a fantastic live mixer but no good for this application. I would be looking at the behringer xr18 you still have to have a computer to record to.

Surface Pro (or even cheaper a Surface 3) and a motu ultralite or rme ucx. Tiny rig and all the IO you may need. The rme would give you a touch screen mixer with TotalMix.
I'm a big surface pro fan.

I really do like the idea of the behringer x18. it does everything I would need or want. I've used a bit of behringer gear and I'm struggling to accept that part of it. the idea and workflow of their mixer appears excellent. hmmm...........
the alesis is right at the top of my list. but it's completely overpriced. there is one on ebay now that's pushing 2k. that's nuts. to be honest any of the gear pushing 1800-2000 and I'd just get the lynx aurora with usb.
any ideas on usb converters that only do conversion. or even only have AD with no other gear like preamps, plugs etc.

The Mackie HDR 24/96 looks to be pretty much a direct knock off of the Alesis. It has a USB interface for editing (I think it does wav files internally) They seem to be about $400-ish on eBay. Disclaimer: I have no idea what it sounds like, and it requires d-subs for the i/o.

Why not using one B. ADA 8000 connected via ADAT to your laptop. This thing is one of the B Gear that works flawless since many years in my studio.
The ADA 8000 MK II got brand new mic pres out of the Midas consoles...
I assisted tracking bands like this in their rooms. I was surprised how good the single tracks sounded. And the best of it all is the setup was fast removed as well....

The X32 sounds fantastic my next mixer is going to be the xr18 WTF I am being turned into a behringer fan.

I'm setting a baseline of 96khz. Then you'll struggle with most affordable 8 track usb recorders as they all expand to 16 via ADAT. My main rig is a Focusrite 18i20 running with an ADA8000 I repaired for ADAT and then an Alesis M1-XL for the s/pdif running at 44.1 or 48 for the odd video project. The fidelity is perfectly good - certainly not the issue with most location recordings IME. Maybe a Behringer X1?

I've never been a big believer in adat or firewire, i've always used aes or usb.
however I'd say the list of gear that cannot do 96khz is a lot smaller than the list of gear that can. there are al ot of good suggestions so far. The Tascam portable units are proving very alluring. :-)
certainly don't want to discount digital mixers either.

Something small I might do is the Audient iD22 (which I have) plus an ASP880 or ASP800. Plus a computer. This could be pretty compact, and pretty affordable. Audient is good stuff.
Or, plus a Midas DL16. (Instead of the ASP) I like what I've heard from the Midas preamps.
You could also make a small rack of a Steinberg UR824, plus a Midas DL16, for a total of 32 mic preamps. That would be quite a lot. A used UR824 is not much more than an Audient iD22. And if you need 8 mic pres that would be enough by itself. The Yamaha D-Pre are pretty good.
I guess I'm not too convinced by an all-in-one unit, for me.

I'm not convinced with the all in one units either.
for this setup I don't need preamps etc I just need 8 or so channels of ADC.
I've got a mixer, outboard gear and a RM bare beast for the rest of the chain. I'm really just looking for something I can plug a patchbay mult direct to for conversion and have it cost peanuts. :-) easy.......

Sopwith, are you using such a rig? I think I could use a i7 powered Mac Laptop rig, I've got plenty of mix power with my thunderbolt mac laptop setup, but I don't have mutli-input capability.

Well if peanuts is really what you mean, then maybe the Behringer ADA8200 is the answer. $200 peanuts, 8 channels.
