I was watching Into The Lair with Dave Pensado, and he said he had to call his Vintage King rep to find out about a 550 EQ transformer option that really makes it even nicer sounding. Does anybody know what transformer he is talking about? Not sure which episode because it was an off topic moment.

That's cool info. I don't know if it was a certain year, or a mod, he wasnt very specific.

Interesting. I have never heard of a transformer mod or option except for the very early 560A's (or it could have been 560B's) that came with or without an output transformer. The 550 that the OP mentioned is different than any of the current production EQ's like 550A or 550B. A little birdie told me their current 2503 outputs are wound in Asia somewhere at a cost appx 75% less than what I pay for my USA made 2503's.

Deane Jensen went into the transformer business for upgrading API consoles. New APIs use Jensens while old ones used cheap transformers with a less transparent sound.

If you want to open up the sonics on those, bypass the output transformer. That will offer a different, more intimate sound. Hang a 50 ohm resistor off the + output and add another one from the - output to ground for an impedance matched balanced output.

I fear they don't want to open up the sound.

Deane Jensen went into the transformer business for upgrading API consoles. New APIs use Jensens while old ones used cheap transformers with a less transparent sound. I think that was the case under Paul Wolf, I'm sure Larry had found other sources.

Last I heard, they are using CineMag inputs instead of Jensens.
Seriously, those crappy old original transformers is what we like about that gear....no?

A 550 only has an output transformer!

That would be nice to have a colored and a more transparent option right on the preamp. R

A 550 only has an output transformer! Yes of course Bob. I was referring to API using Jensens. The only Jensens they ever used was for mic inputs, never outputs.
