Hey everyone, though I might share this for a giggle! So I wanted to build a subkick - but I also wanted to see how cheap I could do it. So mine is: - A Lyon's Golden Syrup Tin (903g)
- A 4" speaker
- A 20:1 output transformer I harvested from a Shure M268.
- A Neutrik XLR
- Duct Tape
- Sandpaper
- Thread adapter for a microphone stand
And some silicon to pot the transformer, the stand adapter (which I forgot to do, so the arm is staying there!) and to stick the speaker on. Total price is probably about 20 to 30 euro. As I'm experimenting I'm finding the bass response markedly improved by ensuring an airtight seal between front and back. Thus the electrical tape over a tiny hole in the speaker. Reasonably good response - not what I was expecting. Roll off after about 60hz. Big bump around 150hz and the lack of porting means the directional characteristics are pretty nice - though I only tested it on speech. I don't have a kick drum lying around, so I might stick it on my amp and make some bass samples against an ECM 8000 or an SM 57. Attachments:

Cool. I actually used a 15" bass cabinet with the speaker wired to an XLR cable once on kick. Talk about crazy bass!
