my bro sold his equinox and bought one of these instead. www.vintagemaker.net/ he said it sounded better and that the monitoring thru the Equinox was *extremely* colored compared to direct from Interface to speakers.

my bro sold his equinox and bought one of these instead. www.vintagemaker.net/ he said it sounded better and that the monitoring thru the Equinox was *extremely* colored compared to direct from Interface to speakers. Remember that when monitoring thru the Equinox, you are using the built-in Gama preamps, which can change the tone somewhat. I had an Equinox at one time, and discovered after much work, that the converters I was using (four MOTU 1224's) were masking the tonality enough that I was never satisfied. So, when I realized the solution was I needed to upgrade to much better converters, and I did not have the budget for it, I needed to consider a different approach. That is when I discovered Metric Halo, and it's internal 80-bin summing. So, the Equinox and the MOTU 1224's are gone.

My bro is rocking a symphony, so converters are not the issue. Why anyone would want to monitor their mixes thru some colored preamps is beyond me lol

Just asking but aren't most converters colored some I know my Rosetta 200 is but in a good way also isn't that what The silver bullet Brad and Dr Bill came up with does? Just trying. To learn somthing here .

Why anyone would want to monitor their mixes thru some colored preamps is beyond me lol Can't quite tell if you are being sarcastic, so I'll respond like this (if you are being sarcastic, then this response is for anyone that comes along, that does not know this yet):
The reason for "monitoring thru colored preamps" (or whatever else is on the mix bus) is to be able to hear what the actual mix bus sounds like, and make proper mix decisions based on that.
I have a Wooly Mammoth Deluxe (and a compressor) on my mix bus, and I monitor that ALL the time.

I should clarify the signal chain i'm imagining with that Equinox box, when you say "monitoring thru colored preamps": DAW master channel -> Converter out-> Summing Preamps -> Speakers
As compared to: DAW sub channel -> Converter out-> Outboard Gear -> Converter in-> DAW master channel -> Converter out-> Speaker.
With the former, you can't reccord the sound of the preamps, so what you're hearing is NOT what gets captured when you bounce in realtime. With the Latter, you can record the sound of the preamps, so what you're hearing IS what gets captured when you bounce in realtime.

Ok just trying to learn more but my tracks seem to change. Using bounce function in protools I do this a different way so I guess I'm asking do you use bounce function or is that just a term referring to your post above for getting to tracks also in the equinox you sum out into hardware then mult last signal then have a 3 way monitor switch so you get daw , sum, sum with fx but you are when summing always going thru shadow hills built in pre iron or steel or nickel lol read that out loud and tell me if it makes sense to you.

Basically I'm asking when he referred to bounce in real time is he referring to pro tools bounce to disk feature.I think he wasn't but I'd like to know because when i use protools bounce to disk there are slight changes to original track. I do internal buss record to two tracks 1mono left 1 mono right then export for further processing I'm trying not to be the purple site guy here lol

i'm referring to the Logic X method for bouncing a track. if you're using external gear, you have to bounce with the realtime option checked, vs. an offline bounce. with offline bounce, you won't hear any external audio processing or instruments (like a Motif or Kronos). I don't use protools.
