Hey gang,
I've been trying to do some research/read the manual, etc.
Can someone confirm whether or not if you chain two 16a together if you can run 32 channels at 96kHz/88.2kHz?
Also have windows drivers gotten better for higher track counts? Thanks....sorry to be so specific, but this would be a big help.

Yup, you can do 32+32 in and out with USB on both Mac and PC up to 88.2/96 kHz. With two 16As daisy chained via AVB you would be able to route all 32 analog I/O into your computer. At 44.1/48 kHz you can do 64+64 in and out, which would allow you to also route the ADAT to the computer or I/O from more interfaces. 4x rates are limited to 24+24 channels.

So you need the AVB box to do it...but it is doable? That's a pretty damn cost effective solution for that kind of track count with DA quality that's comparable to the Apogee Symphony, you can basically double the track count of a Symphony for less than one 16x16! I appreciate it man, thanks!!! =)

No you don't need the AVB box. Read the manual, it answers.

The routing abilities of this box should be noted as well. You can send any channel anywhere you want via the routing function, which makes your life a hell of a lot easier. Also, it tells your core audio the same info, so it's not like you do this routing and the computer still recognizes it as a stock 16a, it's like you've created another interface, and being able to recall multiple routing setups is totally kick ass. I have one for tracking and one for mixing. When I go back to a session I was mixing after tracking it's like I never touched anything, just a smooth operation.
This box is on another level, it should cost a lot more than what it's priced at. The sound is every bit as good as a Symphony too.

Windows is limited to the mentioned track counts due to the USB2 interfacing, that's it. No additional hardware needed. Routing capabilities are marvellous. You can even use more of the output interfaces/DAs connected to the Motu device as long as these are doubles or mixes of the channels that come out of the computer interface. On windows for now the only usable interfacing is the USB connection. I looked into the Echo Audio windows AVB card with audio drivers, it is no reasonable alternative, low track count, atm it is not even capable of double speed sample rates and it's nearly as expensive as one of the Motu devices which offer so much more.....

I'm assuming you've second guessed on selling your console? just get a 24Ao and use it with the 16, that'll give you 16 in and 40 out, for less $, unless you think you need more inputs. The 24Ao specs better than the 16 as well if i remember correctly?

I've used a ton of AD/DA products...but that price point. It's worth investigating. I wish I could keep the Yamaha...but it's looking like there's interest from XL Records to buy it.

My Motu 24Ao sounds really good. Jerome Hamilton claims it is on par with the Symphony, i say it is just a tad away from the excellent Ross Martin DAs and much better than my older AD/DAs, some of them were pretty costly at their time... Very open sounding, they are like optimal candidates for console feed and/or summing mixer, not just for the price. Sad to hear you will part with the console. I fall in love with OTB mixing again since i have the Motu running with some additional external ADAT and SPDIF converters (8 in 32 out) and didn't expect i missed it so much...it's a bit like coming home to the place of your childhood...

dandeurloo wrote this, he has both and i guess he measured it before he gave it away for modding.

It can spec a little less preferable, because the 24Ao has a simpler layout and less circuitry as it has only analog outs that are all the same.

I believe it's got better s/n dr and headroom because he PSU isn't as taxed, not sure what I read?

On paper 16A and 24AO DA should be the same. It's hard to imagine better specs than I measured, I posted those links here somewhere. Sound is another thing entirely.

So both the 24Ao and 24Ai can spec a bit a better due to be being simpler designs in terms of circuitry? Does the 24Ai compare the same way in terms of AD to the 16a? Are they using the same AD circuits in both devices, not just DA? It's interesting to me because I'm most interested in USB2 connectivity (so a range of computers will work even if my primary computer has issues and needs to be subbed out during a session due to time constraints) But if I'm reading this right the 16a has both Thunderbolt and USB2, which the 24Ao/Ai don't (*since they're just USB2?)

From paper, the 16A has better specs on the AD conversion than the 24Ai, so these units have different converter chips seemingly. I don't know if anyone on this board already tested a 24Ai and can tell more. It's correct, the 16A has Thunderbolt, which the 24Ao/24Ai don't have.
