Had a vocal session today and the OLD Beyerdynamic M 300 C rocks with the FET head. I could not belive it its like a total diffrent mic, it opnes up, and is very EQ friendly. Worth the cash!! One of the most useful tools I have bought in a long time.

FetHeads are definitely useful. I had a pair for awhile and used them all the time. Sold them in a pinch and ended up replacing them with a Cloudlifter CL2. The FetHeads are very convenient because you can just plug them straight into the mic whereas the CL2 needs additional cables.

It was very intresting to hear that even a cheap mic pre amp does sounds very expensive with the fet head. My 1073 was blocked and I had to use the RME preamps. The RME preamps tend to be noisy when pushed, this probelm is now solved with the FET head.
I was very sceptical but this thing is a sweet little helper for dynamics and ribbons.....

I'd like to see what it can do with an SM-58

A while back Roger Cloud sent me a Fethead and one of his Cloudlifter boxes for testing. I ran them through the Audio Precision analyzer for comparison including noise and distortion specs.
Both used a pair of jfets, the Cloudlifter used a matched set. Noise and THD were similar, adding about 1 db to the noise floor, pretty good. THD was around .001%. The Cloudlifter had better CMRR (common mode rejection ratio) due to the jfet transistor matching. The Fethead would sometimes make noise if it was touched or pressed when in some mics. The Cloudlifer had Neutrik XLR I/O and was tight. IIRC, the input impedance was 3k ohms, that might explain the extra top end some hear when feeding 2.2 or 1.2k ohm input mic preamps. 3k ohms would have less loading and rolling off of the top end than the lower input impedance would on some mics, mostly dynamics with transformers.

I use the Durham too. Got it on that weird first batch where they weren't happy with the metal work or something. Think I paid like $35. Anyway, they're useful little tools. They definitely change the tone on some mics. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't.
