saw him live in around 90 something, played the worst GREATEST guitar solo I had ever heard.. it was TERRIBLE and f#(*$ing fantastic at the same time

The two me and my friend (here in the bar) came up with were Neil young and Peter Buck. Actually, he said Kirk Hammett, but I nixed it because he is probably still more technically gifted to be in the conversation.

J. Geils is limited as a player, but I still like him.
More common to my ear are technically proficient players that don't say anything that gets to me musically.

Neil Young, attitude can get you pretty far. Keef is a pretty good guitar player, over qualified for this catagory. I've even heard Bob Dylan play a pretty decent solo on the Strat live.
