just curious with all the love for the km84 why sdc's aren't frequented in the DIY community. are they more difficult to find the parts to? harder to put together because of their size?

apparently the 84 is a very simple circuit, perhaps the secret sauce is in the cap ?

As always it's the capsule and transformer.

I don't know what it is...but it's like this super flat cloud that envelopes whatever the source is.

As always it's the capsule and transformer. Yes, indeed! It is very hard to find a good sounding transformer of that size. In principle, you could use a larger one and make a tapered body to accommodate size, but still, it is close to impossible to find a good SD capsule with sound getting sonically close to KK64/KK84. You can still buy the genuine Neumann KK84 capsule. Building a DiY KM84 would be do-able, but I'm waiting for someone to do the dirty work and make a PCB/kit.

I'm wishing for a chi-com or after market k-89 3/4" capsule. I mounted one into a modified MCA SP-1 for Ty Ford and it sounded absolutely amazing. That capsule bridges the gap between 1/2" and 1" capsules having the best attributes of both.
