Looking at building a tube DI. Any thoughts or suggestions? I may just build a tube guitar/bass pre, but that would be more involved. dandeurloo, I was looking for info on your DI, but came up pretty empty. Is it DIY?

No it's not DIY. It's a one off thing I make under Zod Audio. Transformers for it are hard for me to keep up on so DIY is out of the question at this point, and probably in the future.
I will say I am loving the ID DI into my la 2a or my Sta Level. Super cool. I also just did some pedal steel with it and my Sta Level. It was pretty sweet.
If you need DIY DI's then I say Bo Hanson DI's or CAPI VP 312DI.

Well, picked up three Bo DI's from Silent:arts. He is now the licensed maker and distributor of the boards. Forgot to order the cases at the same time. I love paying shipping twice!

I try and avoid the massive gain staging that occurs with most DI > mic pre setups. You end up attenuating the signal only to jack it back up 40 db or so, an error filled exercize.
The DI inputs of most 500 preamps will avoid that, you just take the gain you need at the input impedance you like.

I just used an old chinese mic psu case and made some new front and rear panels on my stereo BO DI, they are very cool. I have a new ZOD tube Di coming from Dan theee man (not) soon enough 8) I heard some samples of bass running through it, it had my gasping and clammering in a mild "I gotta get this before it's gone" panic the way few pieces do haha... I have a real deal 1972 Jazz bass that sounds like a God, so i'll post some samples of the pair when i get it 8)

tonycamphd, I am using a pair for a stereo DI, then one floater to compliment my 2 countryman type 85's. Next will be my planned tube DI for bass. Need to squeeze down my 73 Ampeg V4-B into a psu case! My Hammond boxes just shows up... time for the drill press!
