Thanks Monkey, Wiz and Martin for the kind comments.
Martin, yes, I feel fortunate to have some great tube condensers to choose from. as I'm sure has been stated numerous times the best mic for the job is often source and style dependent. With that's said I'd say the 251 is my overall favorite.

I've only ever used an original C12, a vintage U87, U47 FET, but never a U47, M49 or an Elam 251. The C12 was amazing. Having that arsenal to choose from is a dream come true.

Well, to be fair those appear to be Flea and Telefunken USA mics, the 47, 49, and 251. So not vintage except for the best mic, the U67. Although the 251 is pretty damn close, I guess enough to deserve the ELA M name.

Being a musician & not knowing just about any technical stuff, is point to point wiring done on these boards? Thanks. nope, the presence of a printed circuit board (pcb) eliminates the point to point label. Point to point can be wired on a turret board, but none of the circuits are carried inside a pcb, the matador circuit paths are carried inside the pcb. hope that helps

Thanks Tony, So, is there a difference, sound wise, between them? And were the C12's & 251's point or pcb? Ariel.

Thanks Tony, So, is there a difference, sound wise, between them? And were the C12's & 251's point or pcb? Ariel. originals were point to point, as far as difference, no 2 mics of the same brand and model, have ever sounded exactly the same to me, i've built and tweaked quite a few clones and compared them to real deal classics, sometimes they weren't as good, sometimes they exceeded the originals, I think that with choice components, careful and meticulous consideration in the building process, and using the best parts money can buy in the underestimated and ultra important PSU's, will get you where you want to go whether you go with point to point, or pcb based builds. The most critical components would be(IMO), transformers, tubes, and most importantly, the capsule, if you build everything to a very high level, then give the mic to Shannon Rhoades to install one of his custom capsules, you'll be golden, he's had his ears and hands on the greatest mics in the world, and knows exactly how to get your clone to sound on par with them, and for a ton less than the astounding amount of $ it would require to buy an original.

I recently watched a youtube vid from sound pure, reviewing the Bock 251. The stated opinion of the reviewer was that the Bock 251 had the classic 251 character but was a bit more mellow and 'rounder' sounding than the Telefunken 251. The reviewer did not specifically state if he was comparing to the T-Funk American 251 or the original AKG built 251. But I kind of suspect he meant the reissue from T-Funk USA. (which I have tried out and find delicious).
Can anyone else speak to how magical the Bock might be? Of course, speaking to the reviewer's POV would also be appreciated.
Edit for addition...
Since losing Fletcher, their reviewers seem to be just a step above the guys you encounter at GC, and don't instill quite the level of confidence I used to get from Fletch or the guys at Sweetwater. JMHO... YMMV.

jsteiger's 251 is super mellow if I remember correctly. I demo'd a Tele USA once with a vintage cap and tube and it was much different. Much more "buzzy" "reedy" - and I don't mean that in a bad way. I would imagine there's a large variance in sound among 251's.

Dave Grohl loves the Bock 251, it's is main and only vocal mic. That's kind of cool if you're a Grohl fan like me. He also only sings in the studio while sitting down, for some reason. Maybe that's why he was ready to tour when his leg broke. Ah, singing in a chair, I know all about that! I wonder if it's from his Nirvana days of backup vocals from the drum kit position on stage.

I have been blessed enough to hear a lot of 251's OG & clones and I really have to say I like them all ( some more than others ) depending on who's make and who made for. Martina's to date is my favorite ( OG ) ( I'm a little bias on that, ) Brad Paisley as well ( Korby ) Sal. O. ( 250 ) , Jeff Stieger ( Dolly P old mic ) also Dave Cobbs ( mint 250 ) are all up there , they all share the same traits that creamy nice as John K. Sometimes described as reed sounding . Edged terminated capsules have those traits . Just seems to be a frequency that is desert to our ears lol
