Mark, do you expect to enter the multipattern ribbon fray with a commercial model at some point? I think you've mentioned some prototypes along the lines of the WE 639 using an omni condenser, and I know Les Watts has his version of something like an RCA 77 released or near release.
Thanks for the great microphones.

Doug,
That's funny you mentioned Les--we were on the phone about a couple weeks ago and were talking exactly the same thing...
The multipattern is really cool! My take on it is, it is much easier to make an optimized single pattern than to struggle with compromises inevitable in such mic. Besides, being completely different type of system, the ribbon is not really meant to work well in omni and have a good efficiency. For example, none of RCA 77 multipattern models had a good and solid single pattern--fig 8 was totally asymmetric, the cardioid had a weird midrange boost, and omni was... nowhere close to omni. Sure, for some applications it is a cool mic, but it is not an optimized design.
Les is coming with something interesting, but also, considering the time he took for R&D and complexity of the design I suspect it won't be exactly a budget model.
But yes, we already have two cardioid ribbon designs--one passive, with large geometry ribbon and acoustical labyrinth, and another with an omni condenser where the cardioid pattern achieved by summing fig8 and omni patterns. Right now those are on a back burner, as we would like to launch a vocal condenser, first. Best, Mark

Yes, we already showed a prototype at AES couple years ago. Just need to do it Planning two models--one transformerless, and another transformer coupled. Those will be optimized for cardioid only pattern. Best, M
