Hi Mark,
Thank you for offering your knowledge to us. I have an AEA R88 Stereo Ribbon Mic which I purchased several years ago for a project. I didn't want to sell it after the project, so it's been in climate-controlled storage ( my bedroom closet ) for a long time. I know it's recommended that ribbons be stored upright, so that's how it is. Anything else I should be concerned with? Should I be worried about any degradation of the mic while it sits for so long?
Thanks, Keith

Keith,
In general, some ribbons require vertical storage, some don't. It depends on method of ribbon corrugation and ribbon dimensions. In such cases that would be the best to follow manufacturer suggestions, but other than that any modern mics with ribbons made out of pure Aluminum don't need any additional precautions for a long term storage.
Different matter with many vintage mics (and Beyer) with ribbons made out of Duralum. This is an Aluminum alloy with Copper content and is prone to severe oxidation when exposed to oxigen and humidity. Sometimes the deterioration is so bad that the ribbon just literally turns into powder once you touch it. Definitely, that would be impractical to create a vacuum to store those:), but to protect from humidity it would be a good idea to place such mics into a sealed plastic bag and put inside a fresh silica pack. Remember, if you leave silica exposed to the air in some 10 min it will saturate and won't do anything. You will need to re-fresh it in oven.
Best, M

Thank you. Are there any Samar mods you would recommend for this mic?

Keith,
In that price category I don't think modifying the mic would be a cost efficient solution. If something bothers you in that particular microphone I think it would be better just to get what you really like.
