I was surprised the Shure had more presence (to my ears) and the AKG seemed more subdued, and maybe a little more raspy.

The C214 is not a particularly great microphone. How can I describe it... it's a low-priced budget offering from their higher end line.
The SM7, is perhaps the best dynamic Shure makes and is a very capable vocal microphone. It's a good general all-rounder. It can work on vocal, speech, snare, kick, floor tom, even some acoustic instruments.
Thus, I'm not surprised it edged out a C214.

Thus, I'm not surprised it edged out a C214. The C214 is $50 more to boot? I think my CAD condenser sounds better than the AKG

...that nylon C12-style capsule being employed in the C214 is not impressive...even the dual-sided version in the current 414-lineup is a big step down from AKG's classic brass edge-terminated capsule... ...the Lewitt mics (designed by a former AKG engineer) are better sounding, IMHO... ...as for the SM7B, consider modding your mic with one of these: www.ebay.com/itm/SM7B-DIY-Internal-Pop-Filter-MOD-Foam-Insert-/181628572905...eliminates the need for a pop-filter and offers an even more articulated voice response...the same material is employed in the RE-20... kidvybes,
That foam insert may work, but it looks awful. Can't they make it in gray or black?

Shure spent time and mony to design a great vocal mic! AKG spent as much time and money trying to design a cheap mic that resembled a once great mic!
Any questions?

kidvybes, That foam insert may work, but it looks awful. Can't they make it in gray or black? i have a washable air conditioner filter that appears to be the exact same color, thickness and material - wondering if they are just cutting those to fit? Probably is the same stuff, but hey if it works!

Can't they make it in gray or black? ...looks as though the replacement filter for the RE-20 (same material, center in pic below) is, in fact, black...but to be honest, I used the blue one in my original SM7 and you can hardly even see it thru the grill...the fact that there is a wide gap between the filter and the capsule-element (within the grill cage) seems to support good articulation and clarity...worthwhile modification, IMHO... Thus, I'm not surprised it edged out a C214. The C214 is $50 more to boot? I think my CAD condenser sounds better than the AKG CAD M179? Much better microphone and has the usual 3 polar patterns, HPF and pad to boot. Much better value.

GXL-3000, very cheap very good I have a CAD D-189 as well which I use instead of my SM-58 at times, I think it has more low end response.
