All this talk about the plugin has me surfing eBay for the real thing. The thing is, there's a whole bunch of models. I understand that a higher model # equals more recent, and more fancy, but is there a classic or "sweet spot" for the line? In other words, if you were searching for one, which one would you get and why?

They are all the same and have different presets. Some also have sampling boards. With the roms on ebay for stupid cheap it doesnt matter. The old black and yellow tend to be noiser. but some people say they are the tone. The SE and the Blue steve vai both suffer from peeling plastic fron panels. I have the SE and its awesome. I upgraded my roms and now have all h3500 presets its wonderful.

For rack units...I think the Eclipse V4 is fine...modern, doesn't take up much space...can be found for decent prices used.
But I'm LOVING the H9 guitar pedals...they can work in stereo as analog inserts too and are simple to program.

Yep Rick nailed it ! Condition then figure out what it will cost you to buy the ROMs to have all the presets!

I have the blue S version, upgraded to D/SE standard. No plastic peeling on my unit and it sounds great. I think the D/SE version is the one that everybody wants.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Now to decide whether to allocate some funds. I may invest in a Bricasti System 1 first - VK has one in stock. I'd sure love to find one used, though.
