so, with my interest in quality diy mikes ( 47/12): thank you cat5, of course, now I am interested in tubes and nos tubes or valves if your british Just bought 2 nos ericsson 408a for the mk-u47: one's good the other hissy . So, my question is why : what causes tube noise and or failing performance over time ? Also. what is known about the history of how manufacturers shared parts in the past ? for example the ericson and rca 408a with chrome anode: are they the same tube with same sound or just look similar ? thx: huge topic but many of you here have way more knowledge than me and I am always grateful when people share.

Commonly overheard: Loose filaments, plates or other components... failing vacuum... just a bad piece of tungsten could do it... the electrons have all escaped!
Who knows, mate? There are always bad ones in a batch. Just toss it aside and get another.

I've found the 408/6028 family of tubes to be a crapshoot. Even the good ones are noisy compared to a microphone grade 6072 or EF86. The data sheet for the 6028 actually says it's not intended for audio where low microphonics and low noise are required.

Interesting, that would be singly, in the mk-u47 there are two in series, so does that help the noise characteristics ?

It helps with the noise a little, not much to clean them up IMO. The main reason to run these in parallel is to get the plate impedance down, closer to what a VF-14 was. They work really well for that. I just wish they were quieter overall, and not so random in quality.

yes, as you say a bit of a crapshoot, but when you get good tubes in the mk-u47; it shines !
I am having a good experience with valvetubes in the uk !
