Just bought this after demoing a while back - but I realized I basically just used one JJ Blair preset as a starting point and experimented from there. I was really surprised clicking on a few different presets - some seem much louder than others and it's like the threshold, input and output knobs react differently. So far I seem to be using the headroom and input first - gain staging there and then bringing the output up and choosing the attack and release to taste. I noticed that the output knob seems to make less difference as you go clockwise - if that makes any sense. Like it goes from zero to 60 from about 7-9 o'clock and then it's smaller volume increase from there on out. Also notice it doesn't seem to have a ton of make-up gain...or maybe I'm doing something wrong. Really love what this thing does to busses and the master...it's like it brings out the room tone and makes the snare "bloom".
Didn't I see it mentioned somewhere that some were using it with the input cranked all the way - or something like that?

I need to play with it some more...but it's weird...some of the knobs seem kinda "Fisher Price" than others - ie, I don't hear them working under certain presets. I just need to start at default and learn the damn thing.

My bus compressors settings for ratios and gain reduction amounts always vary, not so much my attack and release times. I read a lot about bus compression before I bought one and there seemed to be a lot of rules. Like, always use it in dual mono, or never compress over 4dB etc. etc. When I started breaking the rules I'd read about, I found that it really depends song to song. Sometimes I use dual mono, sometimes stereo. I've set it at 4:1 with 8dB of gain and it was right for a song, and set it at 1.5:1 with 2dB of gain reduction and it sounded right for another song. I use my Smart C2, which might be the best mixing gear investment I ever made.

I'm talking more about the Vari Mu in general. No ratios. Kinda foreign.

So about $3000? Or is that a new version of their Vari Mu?

Boy, the HW sure does sound a whole lot more dimensional in that vid. The analog tube stuff still rules the musical kingdom over the plugs to my ears.

I submitted an info request the other day, but haven't heard a peep back. Their stereo pre sells for $3333 at VK FWIW.

Thanks, Chuck! I had totally been avoiding the Limit feature - didn't realize it was 4:1...I should really read the manuals on these things.

Maybe I missed it, but there was no comparison to any hardware pieces in that video right?

My oh my, the Electronaut M97 is one big slab of sexxxy. And they give good hype, too: it's a Fairchild with all the regular maintenance features built-in. And it has a ballsier power section. Hmm, I want to try one, I think.

My fav line is ".....it shares many of the qualities that made Fairchild compressors sound the way they do. However, no attempt has been made to mimic the Fairchild’s limitations."

yeah, you found a video on my youtube channel. The sound quality kinda sucks because what you're listening to is the sound of the unit coming out of my symphony and into the Line Input on my iMac. I didn't know any other way of getting audio into ScreenFlow easily other than that method, and the LineIn on the computer isn't the nicest sounding...
