8ch of good Neve and CAPI Heider, and a Demeter VMTP! That would be the start and at least I have The first one covered.

CAPI VP28's and WA76. I've had my VP's for 4 days and can't believe the "mojo" it's added to my tracks running them through at line level. I know I'm in the honeymoon phase but the girth they add to the midrange of my AC guitars should be illegal in 48 States.

I'm doing a rack with 2 -Dizengoeffs D4s, 2 Warm E.q.s and 2 of Dizengoeff's new compressors ( I'm on the list ), or maybe the new La2a's ( I've got a deposit on them ). I think I'll call it the mojo rack.

Lets build a mojo rack. What are the first pieces of gear that come to mind when you hear the "Mojo" phrase. Not dirt but instant color, to aid itb mixes. What would be in your rack solely for adding analog color and girth to tracks. Here are mine. STA Level, Pultec, VC528, LA2A? Compressors (I would pick fewer of these than you'd think):01. Two Matched Chandler LTD Germanium Compressors (FET with Parallel Compression Built in and Carnhill Transformers.) These have six knees and can mimic a slew of compressors, also they're capable of being extremely clean or imparting wonderful harmonic distortions. Think Neve 2254 to the Zener limiter...and many other sounds in-between. If I could only have one stereo set of compressors, this would be it. This is my go-to for 2Bus work...and can fill the slot on any bus really. 02. Two Matched Slate Dragon Compressors (FET 1176 Style Compressors with Parallel Compression Built in) These can pull off 1176 style compression, and higher gain settings reminiscant to Distressors, but without killing dynamics. While less flexible than the Germanium compressors, these round that FET style compression out while still having a ton of great options. Fantastic on the Drum Bus or Vocal Buses. 03. D.W. Fearn VT-7 Stereo Tube CompressorA final limiter for the 2Bus. Both the Germaniums and the Dragons can work on the 2Bus as well as on other Buses, and in a Mastering context...but this compressor in it's simplicity works because it DOESN'T have parallel compression. Working in a smoother fashion than an LA2A or a CL1B...this Pulse Width Modulation style compressor is pretty much finest tube piece I've ever tried and impossible to screw up. It also works amazing in a chain after a FET style compressor on a vocal or bass track. 04. Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor (I've never used this...but I decided to edit this and add it...because it's OPTO and VCA...you have the most expensive iterations of an LA3A and an API 2500/SSL G series style compressor in one.) Plus a lot of top people swear by it...I have a feeling it'd make the grade. *You can get more compressors...but if the budget was limitless...it would be hard not to just buy more of the same types. Equalizers (This is where my focus would be probably if my budget was limitless.)01. Two Matched CAPI LC53a (Love Child EQ)I love that this is an inductor based 550a style EQ with stepped controls. Can't beat it. Works on everything! 02. Great River MAQ-2NV (Mastering EQ)Like the love child of a 1066 and a 1081 EQ with more frequency selections than both combined...meets the tone an API 5500. 03. Manley Massive Passive (Mastering Version)Not everyone's cup of tea...but nothing really can mangle things up like this EQ when you need to do surgery. 04. Two Matched Pulse Techniques 1S3 Pultec EQ's, custom SOLID STATE WITH CINEMAG TRANSFORMERS (Custom Solid State Mastering version with stepped controls...they will build this for you special order.) You have your Pultec sound...but all stepped controls for recall...it's solid state though and won't lose bottom end on the 2Bus...still some people might favor a tube variant, but I wouldn't in this case. 05. BUZZ REQ 2.2 (Mastering Version)Sounds better than a Sontec to me...absolutely insane why this EQ doesn't get more press. It's expensive, but it should be in every major mastering house. Preamps (I would pick eight channels...and maybe a ninth.)01. Two Capi Heider FD 312 Preamps (These just sound so good it hurts, best "API" style design ever.) 02. Two Chameleon Labs 7062 X-Modded Neve 1073 Clones (The EQ is spot on, and modded out they're close enough to the real thing in tone.) 03. Great River MP-2NV (Goes with the MAQ-2NV and fits a spot a "Neve" and "API" can't quit get to in terms of where it sits in a mix.) 04. Two Chandler TG500 Preamps (I actually like these better without the EQ...and in the 500 series format they're smaller / easier to transport.) 05. Chandler REDD.47 Preamp (That "Revolution" guitar sound...nailed it. Also I love how this thing sounds from the demos on vocals. So I'd get one to have it.) This is the only unit on the list I haven't personally at least auditioned or used in other studios. This however is an "honorable mention" unit...I'd get it only if everything else on the list was already in hand.

Nice rack. I thought a few of those have the reputation of being clean? Actually I don't think there's anything in that list that's transformerless. The version of the REQ 2.2 I got to try had Lundahls...and while cleaner than many designs...had the weight/depth of a vintage pultec with a lot more by way of control. Going solid state for the Pulse Pultec clones would again be cleaner...but they are still going to impart percentages of Total Harmonic Distortion. None of the Preamp choices are on the cleaner side...but they are ALL solid state, which keeps tubes in a signal chain at a minimum on purpose in order to maintain transient response, even when tube mics are used. There's a few other things I could add to this list honestly if again, budget wasn't an issue, but I'm going strictly with what I've personally used in almost all cases. (I think I would try some Undertone Channel strips out too thinking about it today...why not?) The main thing is with the "cleaner" stuff...you're getting a lot of control over APPARENT VOLUME...which in my world IS "mojo". Or whatever you want to call it. Being able to lazer focus something until you sit it exactly where you want...adding small amounts of harmonic distortions until things feel exciting. That's the whole game...and many of these units can stack in a chain without the image starting to smear.
