Hey All, I know that people are always questioning the quality of Soudcloud. Here's the word from the Soundcloud site from their FAQ...

Yeah, it's always been pretty clear that they recode the uploads to minimal MP3. I'm not sure why folks thought they'd get 50MB+ audio files to stream at full quality for free..

Is it better to upload a 128kps MP3 or higher quality? If it's going to be downgraded to the lower rate anyhow, should we start with that? Or will starting wth a higher quality file deliver a better end result?

Or will starting wth a higher quality file deliver a better end result? It's better to upload much higher quality and let their encoders come down from there. MP3 encoders are pretty dumb and they'll typically attempt to compact the data again and you'll get more loss with only a tiny reduction in size. Mostly you'll hear it as the flanging of the higher frequencies due to the quantizer noise

I have heard that... and there seems to be some compression algorithm going on with it also!

It sounds bad, but until something as easy comes along with better soundage, it's pretty convenient. It still reveals a lot, not unlike recognizing someone's voice over a cell phone 8)
