Oooh, I'm really looking forward to adding this to my little studio here. Anybody have any advice on best practices for integrating this bad boy into a protools setup?
I'll be bringing the Radar digital signals (AES-2 and ADAT) into my iMac via an RME Raydat sitting in a thunderport PCI-e expansion bay. Right now, I'm planning on tracking to my iMac/Protools and just using the converters on the Radar. However, I'm seriously thinking about tracking to Radar instead, and using protools as a virtual digital console. What I'd really like to do is incorporate the Radar remote/transport.
I have some outboard I'll be incorporating via a patchbay, as well - Dangerous DBox and assorted 500/51x units.
Right now, I'm not planning on a console, but that may well enter the picture at some point down the road. I'd love to have a nice console, but space is a concern, as is budget. If I ever go the console route, I won't be doing anything sub-par.
Any tips or advice from anybody with experience using Radar in a protools environment would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Calvin

I used to use Radar V ADAT w/ going into two FF 800's clocked by a 2192 going into Logic. I"m glad to hear that you're going this route as well, I'm sure you will be pleased! And honestly, I think just using the Radar as conversion is going to be your best bet. If you recorded on the actual Radar HD you would essentially just be recording to a DAW anyways. So unless I'm understanding you incorrectly, you might as well have access to all of the different tools available inside PT.

Thinking about all the possibilities...

Your in for a bad ass setup, Calvin. Happy for you bro. About the console, I use a Soundcraft Ghost but it's highly modified. I basically use the shell because I went through it and replaced nearly every component. It doesn't take up much real estate in the Argosy desk. This might be a viable option for you to look at. Either way, enjoy the Radar!!

Either way, enjoy the Radar!! Thanks. I'm sure I will enjoy the Radar a great deal. I came into the industry on a Stephens 2" 24 track machine feeding a Neotek Elite console. Yes, I was very spoiled from a young age. These days, I just don't get the satisfaction I'm looking for from working a mouse. Anything I can do to get back closer to the way I used to work would be great. So, I'm sure I'll enjoy the Radar, and I bet I'll end up tracking to the Radar rather than just using the conversion on the way to protools (or Logic). I guess it's only natural to want to put a console in here, but we'll see. If/when Jeff Steiger starts making his CAPI console available, I might go that route. It would sound amazing, and I could build it piece-by-piece. Even if it took a couple of years to get it all together, it would be great. Or, I could grab something like a ghost or other smaller console and tweak it to my satisfaction. Either way, having the Radar here will make things a bit more enjoyable. Should be a fun fall season!
