How was it received by Letterman? I wonder sometimes why the masses don't like these kinds of artists more. I guess when you look back, Steve Earle was never super mainstream, but influenced so many people that he became popular. I guess the serious topics and slower tempos don't lend themselves to advertising well, so radio is never going to be the medium it gets played on.

I don't watch Letterman that often but I think he's a country fan.

I'm not a country guy, but man alive that's a good performance/song. The steel really makes it. Killer stuff.

This guy's voice has an amazing natural timbre, with a southern rock and blues influence to me. It reminds me of the VanZants, Warren Haynes, and Allmans, but a whole lot better and more virtuoso. A soul singer with country, blues, and rock elements. The Gov't Mule fan base is gonna love him, that whole jam community will.

There's a lesson in song writing here that this guy can just strum a few open chords and write a hit. Like a lot of great singer songwriters it's all about the top line. Super simple chords with nice melodies, great phrasing, and a lyric that has had more thought than the mic and compressor. Great songwriting requires virtually no gear. It's easy to get distracted from the the challenge of writing. I also really dig how he uses a capo a lot and cowboy chords with a bluegrass sensibility. Of course his voice could carry a tune with nothing but a washboard. Here is a good article. www.americansongwriter.com/2014/07/5-nashvilles-finest-chris-stapleton-songwriter/

On the subject, this is a great behind the scenes vid. Vance is in it and Cobb is playing guitar at RCA A. When the music is at its best

His lyrics and phrasing are so disciplined even though it feels so natural and easy. You can tell he's been writing on music row for awhile. I wonder if he's a syllable counter? His phrases mirror so nicely and his bends and runs seem perfectly placed rhythmically. His verses have a groove.

I was shocked to find out he's had over 170 cuts as a writer. That seems like a staggering number to me.

It's a fairy tale story really. One only someone of his talent is capable of I would think. It's true what they say about creame rising to the top.

I can count on one hand how many albums I've had over the years that I can put on and play from start to finish. This record goes on the list, and not because he's a friend. The record has that "flow", tells a story.
No matter what happens with his career from here forward, Chris will have left something behind that's worthy with this record. That's as much as anyone can hope to do on this life with their work.

Ya this guy just jolted me out of a bad writing rut. No more wasted time on gear and bullshit. Turn the mic on and write a song from start to finish without becoming paralyzed by the accompaniments.

Just lovely. He's in town next week, but the show was sold out. I was hoping to give him regards from Herbie.
I see lot's o"Neumann's there. One looked like it was from 1939. Is the mic he's singing through an original U47?

I agree with your take on Stapleford's vocal. It's got much passion and conviction. So glad I came back to this thread after a few months. Traveller is an incredible song.... I'm becoming a fan of this guy.
