Just thinking about the Vintage King credit line that's burning a freaking hole in my pocket...What could I expect when running the 2 mix out through two Neve LB's in line mode? Much difference at all? Wasteful? Better or just different?

Planing to answer this question for my self. I have a little left to finish on my pair of NV73. Then i am going to shoot out between my vp28's and the NV73's. I will be calibrating and checking them as a stereo pair for this purpose.

I use Neves in combination with API style line amps. Before we created the Silver Bullet and now in the Silver Bullet. I like both most of the time cascading and working the gain staging to get the drive right between the two sets of line amps, but if I had to choose only one it would probably be API style. The secret though is not just slapping them on. That helps a bit. But its how you drive them, and how you play the gain staging between the two flavors.

This is my favorite video of different micpres/EQ's and EQ's on a Drum Bus and a Mix Bus.
The Neve micpre/EQ-a 1099- is shown on the drums at 1:30 and on the mix at 8:32.
Lots of other cool hardwre EQ's as well.

Have done it many times but, you want something Like an AMS, BAE or Vintage, ect not something like the GreatRiver for maximum mojo impact!

I did it a few years ago with an vintage design dmp 73 clone. It opened up the mix and helped the spaces. But I would prefer my console over it. The console helps glueing the spaces, makes it all more 3D and also is the better workflow. In the end its taste depended. If I listen to those old 73 mixes I still can hear typical ITB wholes in the mix. So I would say console and outboard is still the king.

I use a pair of Vintech x73i s for this. The transformers sound good to me and the EQ is terrific for adding a little air.

I've had clients bring in their I.T.B. mixes to run throughout the Neve 1073's. One tells me that their mixes sound like margarine and through the 1073s, They're like the high priced spread.

Before my current all digital set up, I had a patch bay set up where I could route all mixes through some combination of preamps, compressors or both.
If I recall correctly, I used four combinations regularly set up as four busses: 1066>2A's, 512s>176's, V672s>1176's, and V72's> 3a's. After a while I got tired of messing with all that and felt simply using the 1066's on the two bus was as, if not more, effective.
I did use the EQ on the 1066's, but the transformers alone did add some nice density and firming.

If this tells us anything, its that iron is good in the world of audio. It does two thing to the sound though, so user beware!
1. It realigns the low end and focuses it, which is why a pultec (or decent clone) adds so much to the low end on a mix 2. It also adds more low mid/mud which may need to be tamed.
Just my 2¢ worth!

If you're getting too much low mid/mud, go to API.

I have a vintage neve console and we modded one of the buss's to have Jeff's ACA. I use that more then the vintage neve. The api side adds mojo but is still punchy. The neve buss is good for some stuff but I in general prefer the Api buss.
