Cool cowboy, and thanks. I'm familiar enough with your other tracks to say the UM17R is a little light for your voice.. That said, the mids and the top are in C12 class, so it's a trade off. I'm eventually going to get the "R" mod for my U17, as soon as I can afford it. I do often wonder if money would be better spent on a really hot modded C12 clone, but the Blackspade is proven, I've gotten enough unsolicited positive mentions of the vocal sound from folks who've heard my demos to know it's translating well.
In a rock tune, the Blackspade really sits beautifully in a mix and stands out without needing the volume level up. But in a quieter track, I'm looking for a little more richness in the low end, like the Neumann you have gives you, I hope the "R" upgrade does that for me.

My favorite vocal sound when recording was with an original AKG C12. The Blackspade has a strong family resemblance to the C12, like a younger cousin, though it's not a clone. I listened to everything, and the U17 was the closest to the real thing I'd heard, including all the modded ones I've heard. Stick this thing in a busy track and you're golden.. I'll post something for you to listen to wiz, give me a minute... or two ;-)

I have heard both of those before, but It was good to hear them again, thinking of the blackspade.
I hear, in the "esses of your wives track, what I dont hear in cowboys, now that could be many things, but if thats the difference in the 17 and the 17 R then I would say I would pony up the money(by that, i mean if we put the mic up on your missus and that went away). That difference there, is what I hear as the major difference between , I hate to use this term, "chinese" capsules and the really good "german" mics.
I think the mic on your voice, sounds what I would call "barky", again it could be many things, but if it is the difference between the 17 and 17R, then I would again pony up the dough. To me, again, if it is the difference, then the difference in price between those two microphones, is far better being spent , than say upgrading to the BLA version of the Apollo, D Box, or I dare say half the Burl.
I have been really impressed by the 17R and the MOD'd C4 by Miktek.
I ended up buying a Beesneez T1 microphone myself after singing through a U47 and ELAM 251 and realising all the cheaper end mics were not going to get me there... 8).
Both great tunes btw ..I used to play in a rock raga band and we could have done gigs with your wifes song... 8)
listening to the second song, I think you and I might be kindred spirits as far as guitar players go, nice to hear someone play like that... 8)
cheers

Hey Wiz, how do you like the T1? Any other Beez products?

I originally had an arabella and upgrade to the T1. I also own a pair of judas ribbons. All are great sounding mics.
Cheers

I'm with you there wiz, that edge is exactly what the Thiersch capsule improves, as well as the low end getting fuller.
I always wished I could have just bought the "r" in the first place, but I was able to get started with the U17, so it's been cool.
I couldn't agree more with your approach, that essentially is a "mic first" one. You can do all sorts if things, but you can't change the mic you recorded with.

That indeed sounds very good!
It's kind of interesting to describe the UM17 as C12-esque, especially considering its circuit and capsule is more 47/49, and the UM25 is the 251-esque design. Regardless, the top end sounds great to me.

mjb, I was referring to cowboy's post. Although I'm listening to your clip now too. It also sounds great - maybe a little essy. What mic is on the acoustic, by the way?

That's the Blackspade U 17 as well. I'd just gotten it, and wasn't familiar with the best placement, so I sort of put it in front, and hit record. It's a little boomy, but that was my fault, not the U17's. I HPF'd it and EQ'd some of the low end, but I liked the take, so there it is. The Blackspade is possibly the most versatile mic I've owned. I had the Bock 195 before that, and it was sweet, great for acoustic guitar, but I needed more than a one trick pony in my situation.
I haven't even tried a mic filter yet, I wonder if that might help a little with the esses..
