Whilst I'm waiting for other things to arrive, I had the chance to test out the MOTU1248.
Firstly Setup:
A little odd(on Windows anyway), initial setup with Win 8.1 64-Bit I expected to just install the drivers and be done. Not quite that simple, firstly you need the AVB drivers. They don't actually mention USB drivers on their download site, it just says AVB but they're the ones you need.
Secondly you need a router with DHCP or a NIC with a Xover cable and a DHCP server. Once you have the IP address from your DHCP server (Shows up just as a MAC address), download the firmware and then type the IP address in a browser, once that's done you can select the interface mode and then you upload your firmware.
After a reboot your machine should recognise the 1248 and you're good to go, plug your monitors into the main outs (not monitor) and you're rolling.
Sound:
I've used many well noted interfaces, some cheap and some eye watering in price. I gave it a try due to Wiz's fantastic display and oddly enough it's in the same vein when listening to ref tracks. Smooth sounding is the best analogy, switching back and forth between an Audient ID22 and the MOTU, the Audient does sound cheap. But hey it's a quarter of the price so I'd expect it to, from memory it sounds better to me than the RME / Echo / Mbox Pro / Apollo interfaces I've tried out by whatever small margin.
On GS I've heard a lot of comparisons with the Apogee Symphony and urrmmm! Well urr. The fact I have to think about it shows promise, the stereo imaging isn't perhaps as strong but apart from that there's so little in it.
In a nutshell it sounds pleasant yet natural, so maybe you think coloured from this? No not at all, very transparent I'd say. I plugged the Kemper into my monitors and into the MOTU and it came out sounding the same, which can't be said for quite a few converters I've tried.
Summary:
Would recommend!
I'll update further when I get some recordings done..
