I would like to present you MA1 germanium mic/di preamp, that's a discrete class A preamp that I have designed and developed around 2 years ago basing on my experience as electronic engineer. MA1 is not a clone of another preamp but a new one.
MA1 is a trasformer balanced mic/instrument preamp for 500 rack that provides the typical germanium sound but with also the high performances of a modern solid state silicon preamp. To achieve these features, MA1 uses both silicon transistors and an old type germanium transistor inside a new modern/old discrete topology.
The germanium transistor is on the voltage amplifier stage, that is there it makes more "germanium sound" possible. Its sound is an 70 years era trasformers sound with the color of 60 years era germanium gears.
I have given particular importance to obtaining a very low noise circuit since noise is the typical weak point of germanium preamps. MA1 has outstanding noise performances, so it outperforms several silicon transistors preamps in the market too. It has a max gain of 64dB on mic input.
I have sold it by two partial kits only on my sticked thread on Group DIY forum's White Market. build thread groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=49710.0
some photos.
KITS PRICES:
NOTE: is a long time that this preamp is under special promotion, just because it is a new project. For the new more expensive chassis I have had to increase prices.
MEDIUM kit version:
65 Euro per one pc 83 Euro per one pc
62 Euro per two pcs 79 Euro per two pcs
plus S&H and paypal fees.
The kit includes: - chassis : front panel, L bracket - chassis accessories: all screws, standoffs, bolts and washers. - all resistors - all semiconductors - PCB - all capacitors
are excluded the others components: - the input and out transformers - switches and switches' caps (the buttons on the front panel) - potentiometer - potentiometer's knob.
BASIC kit version:
53 Euro per one pc discontinued
50 Euro per two pcs discontinued
plus S&H and paypal fees.

thanks best regards Pier Paolo

200$ sounds about right. I think I built mine for about that much.

I recently finished building a pair of these. They sound fantastic.
As for extras,
Ea2622 input xformer: $45 Ea2503 output xformer: $36 Pot: $10 Switches: $10 Knob & switch caps: $5-8 1/4" DI in: $2
I think that's it. So around $110 in extras, plus the cost of the kits and shipping.

What would you guys rate the build difficulty? It would depend on the documentation? but from the looks of it, it's gotta be pretty easy.. If you hit a wall, I/we will help you out, or our pals over at GDIY will help you out, go for it! 8)

Thanks for the reply T. How can you go wrong forn $200 lol Your constant pep talks have definitely convinced me to dive into diy this year. You may be spending more time digging me out of messes then doing your own work lol I think the first the thingI'm going to do is the color saturator module. Then a Lola. I'm working on a photo build guide for the MA1. I have all the pictures done, just need to finish writing it up. I've been slacking on this, so I'm going to try and get it finished before the end of the week. Edited: I was sorting through pics, and this might be the coolest photo I've ever taken.

Appreciate the welcome!
Main difference is chunger actually knows what he's doing... I just get lucky occassionally.
I'm working on the build guide tonight and hope to have a draft to send PPA for review this weekend. I'll post it here when finished.
I've been messing around with this pre for a bit, and it's really unique. I love it. I have yet to figure out how to describe it, just a greatly pleasing coloration and tone.

I've finished up version 1 of the build guide, and PPA approves. I've attached it to this post. I need to find a way to host the guide online, though. I tried pdf-archive.com. That sucks. Suggestions, anyone?
Any feedback on the guide is greatly appreciated!

I've got 4 of these preamps. They're great. I just ordered 4 of his E.Q.s Send Pier an e-mail, tell him what you want, where to ship to, and ask for a Paypal invoice.

Are these too dark to be used as utility channels? I'm looking for 4 extra channels for drum tracking.
