while there are a lot of great DIY mic builds out there, which are extremely complicated, it seems that it would be only fitting to have a few DIY mic stand ideas worthy of holding these great mics. There are plenty of smart dudes here that I'm sure could dream up a decent idea for a mic stand. I for one don't like spending a couple hundred bucks on a mic stand. For that price I can have another CAPI VP26. Much sexier.
Anyone come across any ideas or have any suggestions?

The pipe part of the stand is easy, standard black plumbing pipe should do nicely. The challenging part would be the threads, clutch adjustment mechanism, counter-weights. Hmmm, next time I'm at the big-box home store, I'll take a look down the plumbing aisle.

I don't know how easy it would be to come up with something from scratch, but modifying something could work. There's a lot of photo/video lighting grip equipment that would probably be pretty easy to convert to heavy duty mic stands. A good baby stand with a counter-weighted boom could probably make an exceptional mic stand. My boss had an old Color-Tran light on a Mole-Richardson baby stand he sold a few months ago that I thought would've made an amazing mic stand with a little modification. Even locking booms like this one could be easily converted. Given that these things are designed to hold lighting instruments that could weigh as much as 50 or 60 pounds on the end of a 10 foot boom, they certainly wouldn't have any trouble holding even the heaviest and bulkiest microphones. This is a cheap one that's selling for $35 on ebay, but if you look around you'll find the sky is really the limit with this stuff.  |

There are adapters around that allow you to go back and forth between the mounts on mic and light stands, IIRC. Anyway, I'm not sure what the actual question was.. Do you just want to make something really cool, or are you looking for something with a specific purpose? I welded together links of chain to make a mic stand for a person once. It was cool but super heavy and couldn't be collapsed. I also welded together some rebar to make a small but heavy stand that I use for my under-snare mic. |

Yeah find a used Heavy duty light stand , I have said this before on other forums but I know SR companies who have huge inventories of mic stands who are buy large amounts of dirt cheap stands and are recycling the parts as they break. People are begging to realize other than Latchkake and Orbitz they are all coming out of the same factory with different labels .

So nothing really adjustable in the plumbing section of the local big box home store. But, interesting possibilities with the tripod work lights that they sell.

cool. I wonder if there are some possibilities of modding some current cheaper stands to make them heavier/sturdier. I'm sure sandbags are fine but having a good counterweight or longer boom-arm might be nice.

Very simple mod to a cheap mic stand is to put a steel barbell weights on them - sitting on the base. The weight keeps the stand stable. Usually you can unscrew the vertical pipe somehow to put the weight on. I learned this trick from my neighbor and haven't had a mic nosedive since.

Used brake drums and rotors (after pressure washing to remove the dust, and paint to prevent rust) make great weights for stabilizing mic stands.
