Knowing John Siau, who I've hung out a bit with and share a close mutual friend with, it's probably what they say it is and reasonably priced for such a state of the art product.
Benchmark was a boutique broadcast audio manufacturer that made all of their sales from a booth at the NAB show. They lost a lot of their business to broadcast consolidation where corporations like CheapChannel wanted to place a single order including a lot of stuff Benchmark didn't sell to the lowest bidder. As a result they turned to "Pro" Audio and later high-end hi-fi when they couldn't get very far with banjo bazaar. John is one of a handful of top electronic design engineers in the world. He was with CBS Labs working on HDTV until they folded. The founder of Benchmark was a neighbor and friend of his.
