Pretty good list, think the transient designer should have a place in there though.

I've seen that before.. Some of those choices make me wonder if they simply ran out of other choices..
RNLA? Mediocre at best. Smart C2? It's the same as the SSL G series.
Where's the 33609?

I don't have any of those top 20 here. I still manage though.

I had a hard time continuing after seeing the 3630 on the first page..... Oh come on that's the best one! A 3630 has been in my bass rig for the last 10 years, it has failings in the studio but it works great with my 500 watt Gallien Krueger.

I had a hard time continuing after seeing the 3630 on the first page..... I know it doesn't belong on the list because it's the one I actually have.

I just got a 3630, I'm currently doing some small mods before I really test it out. Using Smallbutfine's advice!
I love lists like this, just a round up of the most talked about stuff. Lists like this are the reason I finally bought a dang Tube Screamer :-O even though it's probably not something I really needed. You just keep hearing, "greatest stomp box of all time" and it's hard to resist.

To me, the most astounding thing is this statement: "The 2500 doesn’t come cheap ($2,995 RRP), but Waves’ (relatively) faithful modeled recreation offers a similar flavour for a considerably more affordable $300."
Is there another industry where there is marketing of the same product where you can get a 90% discount and a promise of nearly the same product?

BA-6a, BA-25 and the CBS 411 should be on there before several of those. A couple of those have had many lives beyond recording also.

R I'd never heard of the BA-6A, but surfed around and people claim that the "Ramble ON" acoustic was done with a BA-6A. So, if true, if anybody wants to describe the BA-6a's contribution to the sound that would be cool. Always trying to learn....

I laughed, guffawed, chortled, and nearly choked on me tea when I saw the 3630 there first on the list!
Kudos for including the LA3a (but at #13?) 4, 3, 2, 1... fair enough Neve 2254 yes, but the 33609 is THE ONE from Neve.
Where's the Federal in all this? The Zener?

I own the grandad of the BA-6A, the RCA-86a, which has been modded to be more like the missing link between the RCA 86A-2 and the BA-6A. Gates had a similar limiter called the M-3529, and as time passed and audio needs grew, the Sta-Level and others were designed and built. The rest is history. The BA-6A had many uses from tactical wartime efforts to typical radio broadcast. I tried to trace the origins of my RCA-86A's original purchase but hit a road block in the search. More than likely, as hot as they were originally designed, mine drove a signal for up to 30 miles for telephones of the day. Just running through those transformers is sometimes all I need to do to get a slight color happening and most times, I rarely hit -4 on peaks unless I am trying to tame something like a shrilly fiddle.

Here is a glimpse of what they look like. The BA-25 can do some amazingly invisible squishing when needed or it can be a great color machine. I am just getting used to the 86-A now that it has been modded. Both are very useful tools when you need that RCA sound. R R

I always laugh when people quote Alesis self proclaimed " most popular compressor " Lists like this are a joke DBX 166 and non Vu160 have always outsold 3630s 10 to 1 and pre date it! This list covers the early years the classics and modern but misses that middle ground of the 70s through the. 90s . It lacks a understanding of what and why you would choose a piece, it reads like a 12 year olds list of top Cars, He's never driven no less never driven anything on the list.
