Sounds wonderful, but when spending that kind of money on a ribbon mic, do I want a robotically built product, or would I prefer to purchase a product that has a more human element in the design and assembly...considering exceptional new ribbon models from smaller more dedicated shops like Mesonovic and Samar, I'd likely pass on an $800 Rode ribbon-mic...besides, I much prefer passive ribbon designs myself, with the option to couple with an inline device like a Fethead, Cloudlifter or Durham if needed...

unless i'm mistaken, it is a passive design, that was a transformer they were rolling. Also, the automation process looks solid on this, taking the human element out of tensioning the ribbons may be a good thing? it's not going to make a mistake. That said, you can pick up one of Marks beasts for a little less, that's the route i'd go personally. This looks like a damn good mic though

I've built and re-ribboned a few ribbon mics. Using a razor blade, tissue paper, a ruler, steady hand, and holding my breath to cut the ribbon, a hand crank for corrugation, and tape and tooth picks to center and tension the ribbon. I don't think a human could match the accuracy what I saw on the above video. It's just that I find it hard to pay $800+ for so little parts in the construction of a ribbon mic.

My God, that song is beautiful. Even if people aren't interested in the mic, I'd recommend watching the video. Thanks for posting this wiz.

Also, the automation process looks solid on this, taking the human element out of tensioning the ribbons may be a good thing? it's not going to make a mistake. ...yes brother Tony, both active and passive ribbon mics employ a transformer...the active ribbon also employs an additional preamplifier circuit, often FET-based, which boosts the mic's output, which is the case with this new Rode offering... "Introducing the RØDE NTR, Active Studio Ribbon Microphone..." www.rode.com/ntr...and similar automation processes are used to manufacture Rode's LDC capsules, which while consistant, don't garner any particular praise as capsules go...isn't all this automation just a further refinement of what many dislike about products being manufactured in China?... ...to my thought process, the design simplicity of a good ribbon mic is not unlike that of a beautiful string instrument...and the thought of a master craftsman like Mark Fouxman, cutting, crimping and tensioning the ribbon-element in my mic is more appealing than this robotic process, however precise...after all, once they recover the cost of the robotic assembly line gear and tooling, they could produce those mics for pennies on the dollar...my point being, at $800 each, you're paying for the cost of the machinery needed to automate the manufacturing process, rather than the skills of a master craftsman, as is the case with Samar, Mesanovic, and some of the other boutique ribbon mic companies... ...that said, the recording in that video is impressive... ...and, now I'd like to take the opportunity to spam this thread with congratulations to Deni Mesanovic (a RGO member) on the release of his new Model 2 and 2S Ribbon Mics (three cheers for the little guy!) ...and while not the production quality of the Rode video, here's some test sessions of Deni's new stereo ribbon Model 2S:

I personally preferred yours to the Rode mic, I love a clear Hi-FI Ribbon which tames harsh overtones and spikey HF. Piano sounded a little "pointy" in the HF, but in most cases that's one hell of a mic... Please tell me you can get them in Europe . Are you planning on doing the Model 2 in a cardioid configuration?

Glad you like it! We should have both the Model 2 and Model 2S in Europe by March/April. Our website will be updated as soon as this happens. I've been playing around with cardioid designs for a while. I don't have anything planned yet, but you never know...

Before I forget, does anyone make a live vocal ribbon mic like the Beyer M500?
I recall it was very popular for a while for live vocals.
I think the V90r replaced it. I haven't heard one of those yet.

Ty Ford

Regards, Ty Ford The Beyer 500 is pretty much the one and only, but I once heard one with a Stepehen Sank Reribbon that was a step up ! 500 s can be found for resonable money used if your not in a hurry!

Hey,
A V90r just arrived for eval. I'll have to hunt around for an M500 to compare it.

found an M500. First very quick listen…it's hotter and heavier than the M500.
My guess would be bigger magnets.
