So this isn't meant to be a "which one is better" thread. I've got 4 VP28's already and they're great. I'm in the market to probably get several more and am taking the opportunity to look at other options at the same time. I'd be interested to know the forum member's take on the aml vs vp28 that have experience with both. I'm wondering if the ez1073 has something to offer that i can't get with the vp28. They are a lot more money and I could probably have at least 2 vp28's for the price of one ez1073. That being said, they're not really that much more when you consider you're getting an eq as well.
Thoughts?

Thoughts? Having experience with both Neve and API, I would love to have both flavors. If one doesn't work, the other will. Don't need much more than those two. Add a hifi option and you've got a full boat.

hifi option as in john hardy or millenia flavor? I haven't used a Hardy, but I'm one of the few guys that will admit to loving Millenia and Grace pres. I really like those super clean pres on overheads and clean acoustic. The True preamps, on the other hand, I didn't jive with personally.

RTZ will take you to a sweet spot between hifi and vintage Neve. The Ingram 685, True systems PT-2 or Forrsell SMP-2 would give you some different voices. Also an AEA RPQ is handy to have. I use the line function with those for my more vintage tube pres for the highpass filter, different gain stages and the air band they have. They are also really great on their own. I usually pair a vintage RCA 44 with mine.

I have an AML 1073ez. It will defiantly give you something that other Neve press won't. It's straight up gritty, in a nice way and the eq is excellent. It's a great pre.
I have a lot of Neve flavors but no Capi yet. I might be interested in working out a trade if you are??

Thoughts? drew571, they're different enough to have both. Both are excellent… IMO, the VP28 is the best "api sound" option other than getting a vintage console. As for the 1073 sound, I love the ez1073 and find it useful on many sources. I primarily record vocals and guitars. It's hard to beat the midrange punch of the VP28 on egtrs. If you want to smooth out the mids a bit, the ez1073 does that well along with a slightly rounder low end. Same goes for vocals. VP is gonna cut thru better, ez is gonna be a bit smoother. Generalizations, mind you. You may already know this, but you can widen your tonal palette with different DOA choices in the VP28. My personal favorite combo is 1731/2520. Hope this helps. Btw, if you're up for it… get the 19" rack kit from AML, knobs from jsteiger at Capi and cases from dandeurloo. Not much more money than the 500 series and they look badd ass.

CAPI and Neve flavored play very well here I have 8 ch of Dan Alexander's recreation of 1272's and 5 of the VP26s it would be 8 but I'm thinking 8 Heiders ! In my world CAPI Neve Clean or Tube one of them is going to hit the mark!

littlesicily, do you put the 1731 first and the 2520 last in the chain on your vp28? I have them the other way around currently. Might have to try flipping a couple.

I have both and agree with littlesicily. One must have both if you want to cover the bases. IMO, the EQ makes it worthwhile no matter the difference in the per's. But yeah, API and NEVE. The perfect compliment. You need both and those two choices are the best of what's available today at non vintage insane prices.

I have to say that the vp28 is my fav of all time. I do want some 1073 PRE'S for the big bottom, so i will probably build a pair of Dons classics NV73's with true 24volts(no voltage dividers like ALL the rest of the 500 series nevalikes, but you can only do that if you use a 51x box). But as far as the 1073 eq, I shot out an AML1073 against the capi lc53 eq, and IMO it wasn't that much of a fight, the LC53 hammered the 1073 which sounded phasey and noisy compared to the pure musicality of the LC53. I didn't own either at that time, and even though i fully expected the legendary 1073 to win out, it was exactly the opposite, of course that is JMO, YMMV.
