So, I bought the desk below, which is great for my hybrid mixing. However, the faders you see are a Tascam US2400 that was built into the desk and I cannot get it to work for Cubase or Pro Tools. So, I'm looking for a control surface. Thanks to anybody with experience who shares their thoughts.

Is it a Mac issue not having a 64bit driver? None of those were ever implemented in the app--they all emulate McU or HUI protocols at the app level, I thought.
Regardless, you'll find control surfaces a personal thing that has to do with the app and how you work. I use 16+1 MCU faders in Cubase. I wouldn't bother in Protools where you have to scroll around the mixer. Logic, they work wonderfully (MCUs were originally proprietary for emagic).
To do it over, I'd just buy a Steinberg CC121. But I don't do the "many fingers on many faders at once" thing I've seen others do.
I will say I recently went to sell the MCUs when I scaled down, and couldn't give them away due to the cheap Behringer knockoffs. Even Mackie has dropped their own price for the first time in 20years of manufacture to compete. Ironically, the Berhingers lack THE row of buttons that make MCUs work so well in Cubase....for me...the hard wired direct recall of the mixer views. So, they wouldn't do for me--i also seem to remeber you can't combime them like MCUs, so they're "just 8" like the main McU with no extender.

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that I am using a PC using Cubase 6 and Pro Tools 11 running Windows 7 64 bit. The Tascam worked with my partner's old Mac and Pro Tools 10 HD, but wouldn't work with Pro Tools 11 non HD or Cubase 6. I'm looking for the "many fingers on many faders" mixing approach. So, thanks for your information about the Mackie Control Universal. I wonder if the Mackie Universal Pro fixed the Pro Tools scrolling issue. They are already going for way less on Ebay. Interesting. People don't seem to want faders anymore.

A strong vote for the Smart AV Tango here. There is one on ebay selling way below what they normally sell for.

Until I get my SSL AWS948, I am completely satisfied with the Digidesign C|24. It has great control over faders, knobs and buttons in PT and has a decent submixer and monitor section to boot.

Control Surfaces are about 2 things 1 Your Choice of DAW 2 The Conteol Protocal!
HUI sucks, every time I use HUI I find myself wanting more! If you must use HUI just buy The cheapest thing You can find !

If someone were now inclined to be dedicated to Cubase in the long run, and they wanted the perfect control surface, it would seem that the Nuage by Yamaha would be the way to go, albeit expensive. At one point many years ago I had the Steinberg Houston controller which was pretty awesome for Cubase, despite the fact that some functions were waiting for implementation. FWIW, the new Behringer X-touch looks like it might be a winner.

Euphonix Artist here. They are OK, but the tactile feel is not perfect, IMHO. However, I have no experience using other types of motorized faders so my opinion is worth somewhere south of 2 cents. I see a lot of them in use in pictures of project studios, so people must like them well enough. I keep going back and forth - the whole mouse vs fader thing.

I keep going back and forth - the whole mouse vs fader thing. Tablets fall somewhere in-between here, right? No tactile feel, but you can grab 4 faders with 4 fingers. For those of use who record ourselves, being able to move around the room with your console is a god-send. The Remote app that comes with Logic works perfectly for me - and the price (uhmm.. free) is more than just right. No, it's not in a class with the the high-end stuff, but.. isn't it all about function and work-flow?

Thanks guys for all your options. I wish I could afford the more expensive one's. I should have put in the initial post how much I'd be willing to spend, but it was a good-and eye opening- experience to look at your suggestions nevertheless.
The closest thing to my budget is the Mackie Universal Pro. They say it will work with Pro Tools 11 and Cubase 6. So, I'll check it out. That being said, with so little development in this area I wonder how far away an affordable touch sensitive screen is.

I want an AWS so bad, but not for the control aspect so it probably wouldn't be the best choice for me. I've seen 4Ks go for 1/4th the price of used AWS, so that would probably be the way I would go if I should ever win the lottery.

I used to use 24 MCU faders, but found I still gravitated to the mouse/keyboard because I was always looking at the Pro Tools screen.
So I sold the MCU hardware and have eliminated "the middle man":
- 42" LED display, mounted on my desk at a 25 degree angle - 42" IR touchscreen overlay frame from Zaagtech (similar to the PQ Labs model that Slate Raven uses) - DTouch from Devil Technologies (like the software-only portion of Slate Raven) - Works with Windows 7 and 8, and OSX is in beta.
Now, I have a control surface where I interface _directly_ with Pro Tools.
Total $$$?? -- less than $1000.
(I'll post some pics this weekend)
