I know it's not as fun as talking about your favorite blue stripe or U47 or 000-18, but it's what will keep us alive and being able to afford them.....

To all the song writers...do you guys get checks from ASCAP, BMI and SEASAC??? I ask because my businesses pay dues to each of these.

To all the song writers...do you guys get checks from ASCAP, BMI and SEASAC??? I ask because my businesses pay dues to each of these. Typically, that IS the only source of income for writers these days. But not all 3 - just ONE o the above. For me, BMI. I produce music, license it (and these days it's practically a give away fee) and then earn the bulk of my income from Broadcast royalties - i.e.: my BMI statements. But I assume you own live venues from your comment. All my BMI money is from Broadcast (Cable, TV, Radio, Streaming, Films), not live venues. Live venue income is a very tiny percentage of what BMI and ASCAP et al collect....

They collect performance royalties for you. I switched to BMI a while back...just checked and I got $12.61 cents for background music - muzac, cms and touchtunes.

Do you have a comparison you think is valid? The best comparison would be co/write a hit with one ASCAP and one BMI writer.

I had a Top 5 when I was at ASCAP - and my co-writer was BMI. At one time, I was down $65,000 to her. At that time, ASCAP was rectifying situations like that. After that song paid out the lion's share, I left and went to BMI. I just couldn't see a reason to stay (although I like what ASCAP stands for more than BMI). The last time I checked (several years ago), I was still getting about a third of what my BMI co-writer was getting - but of course, I had no recourse. I haven't had another hit that big, so I can't compare the two from that perspective. BUT - I can say this - when you switch PRO's the old PRO continues to collect for the song(s) that made money there. However, the new PRO takes over foreign collections. For the last 3-4 years my BMI foreign distribution has been consistently more than my ASCAP domestic distribution for the same songs. The last quarter my foreign royalties were 8 times what my domestic royalties were. Now - there's always the chance that through the years, these songs become less and less popular in the US and more popular in foreign countries, but if I told you what I was getting quarterly for a No.2 and No.18 Country hits, you would gasp. (I'll be glad to share that with you privately, donr) Put it this way - I can't pay my cable bill with it. The problem with this is that when you complain about anything, you get labled as "bitter" or a "malcontent." I don't want anything I haven't earned. But it's hard to sit by and watch your co-writer make dramatically more than you. I don't begrudge her AT ALL. Good for her! In fact, BMI just awarded her a "1 Million Spins" plaque. I believe at BMI, that puts her in a higher pay bracket with the song. ASCAP awards nothing. She received a Pop Award from BMI because our song went No.8 on the Adult Contemporary charts. Sat at the table with Barry Gibb. I got an ASCAP magazine. LOL. So, really, the only way to put all this in the past is this: write another hit. That's what I'm trying to do.

Interested in sharing what these hit tunes you wrote are? I'll pony up the $1.29 for the iTunes download and put a penny in your pocket. Edit: Google is my friend. Found it.
