my feelings too and he has basically completely undercut selling them now too, oh and you can get relab for another few bucks, sure am glad I dropped like what 2 grand on plugs ,,oh ya and we haven't been able to use most of them in pt 11 cus they weren't aax so not a lot of value there
so apparently he will work out some sort of get all plug use no payment plan for some period of time for people who own slate plugs, sounds awfully complicated to me !

Think of how the dealers feel about these subscription services! Man we have pushed Slate, Avid, Waves and they are going to cut us out and have a constant revenue stream! I know the Plugin Developers have had a hard time with non revenue generating updates, and this is the new software buisness model but what ever consultant pushed this idea is clueless to the fact that MI / Recording industries is infamous for its Customers having bad credit! The cost of all the Outsourced Credit prossing is going to be twice what they estimate when they realize how much customer contact it's going to take!
I bet the consultant owns a credit prossing agency!

Is this real? $20/mo for all Slate plugs? Blows my mind. I assume that he'll keep selling them as is too or is it subscription only from here on out?

He's been asked more than once to say in writing on the board that the price will not go up beyond the $20 since he keeps basing his model on that. He's avoided answering that one like the plague.
The GS Sycophants are too busy drooling over the prospects of having all slate plugs for $20 to do any real thinking.
He's got them hook, line, and sinker. He's a businessman, not their friend. But he's good at making them think he's their friend so everyone believes him.
I made my feelings well known in that thread.
Whatever - I don't use his plugs except for SSD so it doesn't bother me. The whole thing reeks to me.
I know the other plug manufacturers are watching this with a keen eye. Watch what happens. Then everyone really is gonna be whining on GS!
I will say it's a little nauseating watching Chris from AirWindows shill so hard for slate in that thread. It amazes me how blind everyone really is.
That's all I have to say about that!

Seems like kind've a big "fuck you" to people like me that bought 4 or 5 of his plugs at $150 apiece. Although, I don't want to have to worry about paying another $300 worth of subscriptions for plugins to every company out there. I'd rather just go completely outboard.

I thought we hated avid for doing a subscription. Shouldn't we be hating on slate too?

Why is Chris from Airwindows shilling for Slate? I don't know but he's shitposted in that thread more than once about how Slate is going to transform the industry again and what a great deal this is. About what a great thing Slate is doing for everyone by making his plugs available for $20 a month. It's like Slate's facing more resistance than he thought so he called in some help.

I thought we hated avid for doing a subscription. Shouldn't we be hating on slate too? Lol...don't look at me. I gave it to him in that thread. The problem is that it's near impossible to talk any sense into anyone in that thread because all they see it as is that somehow I'm trying to get in the way of having their dreams for $20 a month. I ended up bailing although I'm lurking here and there just because it's mind blowing how easily people can be led so I guess I'm just watching it like it's a train wreck and I can't look away.

I kinda like the idea of subscription.... in theory.
Company gets consistent revenue stream...
makes cash flow easier our end (if you budget right)
If (IF) its handled right, could be a good thing.
Lets face it.. we are really renting this stuff anyways...
cheers

Lets face it.. we are really renting this stuff anyways... cheers Wiz I think the bigger issue is that you're transferring control of what you have to someone else. I'm a big fan of software and plugs that tend to use serial numbers and other non-intrusive forms of copy protection like Satson or Orange Tree Libraries where they "watermark" your name into the software and so I tend to only buy and use software that use that kind of protection. I'm aware that I don't own it technically but it was never a big deal to me so because I don't sell my plugs and software so I don't worry so much about navigating those tricky legal waters. So I get my serial and even though I may not own it, I can use it in perpetuity. If the company falls off the face of the Earth, if I build a new computer, etc. I can reinstall when I want and enter the serial number. In the subscription model you're giving someone else control over your software. If they want to raise the price, they will. If they want to cut off your access, they will. Slate can tell me all he wants about how he'll always have the full version for sale if you want that. Adobe had the same spiel when they started. We all see how that ended up. Plus for those of us who like to keep our DAW computers off the internet (another reason why I only buy serial and similar copy protected stuff) going subscription means having to stay attached to the internet. What I find the most humorous watching all those people in that thread willingly give up their control and freedom is that I bet you at least half, if not more of them, were probably people who ranted and raved against DRM and how they'll only buy DRM free mp3s because no one should have the right to cut off access to their music library. Funny world.

i have skimmed the thread
He will have out right purchase and subscription
People who bought before will get some access to new plugs free time
if you subscribe you will get a credit towards purchase annually
People are worried he will have add on services like relab so $19.99 is just a base rental price
No mention of how this effects resale for current owners
Although I am an amateur songwriter, I find I am getting tired of all the plug in bump and grind and grind. I already have so many plugs I don't or barely use, I wonder if I will buy ANY more?
Initially, I simply wanted a simple good recording system and bought Apollo and while I do love all the gear stuff I am seriously thinking about what a small OTB HW based system would be like: buy good stuff and just use it: forget about the hype and sturrm and dang !

This right here is where it's at. We got guys like Bryce selling great analog gear at a slightly higher price than plugins. I'm pretty sure the software hockers are figuring that out. Then you have companies like UA providing channel count, ad/da affordably to use the hardware. For the last couple years, I've been using some of the UAD stuff, a few Waves plugins and stock filters and eq on Cubase, but mostly hardware for the heavy lifting. I say let em do whatever, it's not going to effect me and I doubt it will effect many of you.

We have Warm Audio and CAPI who are providing as good outboard as I'd ever need and for exceptional prices. Yeah, you can't have as many instances as plugs obviously but I'm finding more and more everyday that tracking with this outboard with proper gain staging and careful mic placement yields far less plugins as mix time. All we need from these guys now is an optical/tube type of comp and we need svart to start making 8-16 channel converters so we can use it all. Is that really asking too much?

This new subscription approach to plugins and now with PT12 (I use Logic and Mixbus) confirmed my thinking from some time ago that it's a never-ending money pit (yes, that's audio in general ). Some companies have survived, some don't and won't. In my view (fwiw) this is no different than the automobile industry moving to a model of leasing. Not a fan but there will be plenty of people that think it's a great deal so they can have access to things they otherwise could not afford (today). We have become a society that views consumerism as nothing more than "what's my payment?". Very sad and eventually problematic. I have paid for and trashed more plugins than I care to admit. At least with hardware I own it, doesn't go out of style, don't have to worry about my current operating system, etc. Let's hope developers don't follow the cable companies model and constantly charge more to their captive audience. Maybe the world changed and left me behind Scott

I personally don't see what the big deal is. The big thing about VMR for me is it is a 0 latency plugin...Its like the UA console without the steep prices of UA's plugins. Would you guys be upset if UA did a deal like this...you could either buy the plugs or rent them all for 20 bucks a month?

Well everyone will see this their own way but if one has invested a couple of grand and can now have more plugs ins for $20 bucks a month and if probably the resale value of your investment just tanked and you have to pay iloc transfer fees and if you have not been able to use these plugs for almost 2 years maybe yo would see it differently ?
anyway we will see how tis shakes out.
i was seriously thinking of selling all my slate plugs ( only use ssd) and have been waiting, waiting , waiting, for them to be aax, hoping that would help their resale value and help offset the iloc transfer fees and now the subscription service, I feel will undermine their value, but perhaps not as some people would prefer to buy not rent
its frustrating cus slate has also pretty well admitted that the old code really wasn't very efficient, quelle surprise !! I never used vcc as demonstrated as I could never get enough instances to work even on an i7 quad. I much prefer uad tape emu's and I don't remember that last time I used fg-x, due to the aax problem.

Superwhack summed it up for me. If subscription becomes the norm, I would have to pay subscriptions for Avid, Slate, waves, UA and about six to ten others I don't have the patience to list. So at $20 a month, that's around $200 a month for me. That's $2400 a year. That's a car payment. I won't do it. This stuff is like crack enough - I don't need to schedule a monthly payment with my dealer. I'll buy this shit only when I choose to buy it.
