What's the common expression for when you record the rythm section, could be with guide vocal, but in the cases when you know you will carry on and expand the arrangement with overdubs and most likely also redo the lead vocal? In swedish, in direct translation/semi slang, we say to 'lay the ground(s)'.

It's similar in english, usually we say something like "lay the groudwork" or "lay the foundation" for situations like this.

Yeah, scratch vocals are what I call them. The singer better have a good excuse not to get some keeper tracks as the band tracks though!

If these are tracks that are keepers, I seem to recall it being called the "bed" back in the 70's. ..or am I just making this up?
