I'm just looking for the simplest recording app on mac and/or phone that records and allows you to export and email as an mp3? It seems like every one I've found will export but only as AAC or MP4. Then I have to pull into itunes and convert to mp3, because inevitably, somebody always comes back with the "I can't open mp4's"... I saw Tapedeck - but it's AAC/MP4

Define "SIMPLE"
What features or workflow requirements might you need ..or not need? Is price a consideration? ..free? ..under $100? ..under $200?

Right now, I usually finish a song and record it with Voice Memo on the iphone. Then I email it to myself. BUT, I have to import it to itunes and convert it to an mp3. Then I am usually writing in Pages, so for the knucklehead PC guys I have to export as a Word file...Then I open an email, include doc and mp3...Longer process than I would prefer.

I just use the voice memo on the iPhone. Anyone you email the clip to should be able to play it back right within the email. Most musicians under 50 have iTunes. I do work with a number of jazz guys who don't even have computers or email, lol.
Usually I write charts and attach sound files separately. Muse is a great free program for writing charts, it will even play them back. Most guys I work with expect a Pro Tools file, a simple MP3 bounce or scratch, and a chart. Sharing PT sessions is easy with Gobbler.

Pencils don't tell you the top line melody unless you're writing it on a treble clef...not exactly what I would call a time saver...

Doesn't IK Multimedia make something like that? iRig Recorder or something. I used to have the free version on my old phone. It was cool. I think the paid version had multiple export options?

Cubasis would probably be pretty cool to carry to a writing session, John.

Record and Play. For recording songwriting ideas and work tapes. I just use the voice recorder on iPhone. Sounds like ass but it's easy to shuffle stuff around for ideas.

I use the $1.99 songwriting app hum. It has options to email and message audio and lyrics, but I've never done that. Their website is justhum.com

If what you are looking for is straight to Mp3 from phone. I use mp3 pro. You can find it on Google play. Record, save, rename, email. I use this for song ideas when driving or if I don't want to turn on the big rig.

But if we could take a time trip back to 1995, I'd suggest Band in a Box with your flashy Windows 95 Crash-puter and a dictaphone on the side!

That Mp3 Pro app seems to be PC only.
That's what I use - the voice recorder thingy...but it exports as mp4's, which many can't play for whatever reason. There has GOT to be some program that would allow you to record an mp3, choose the quality level (size - prob do that before you record), name it/ability to re-name, and then share. That recorder app does all of that except mp3's.
Like I said, right now I record, email, import to itunes, convert, open email and attach said file...but that is ENTIRELY too many steps.
