It hit me Today that there are two ways to make it in the music business. The first way is to write something catchy and get lucky. The second way is to spend 30 years honing your craft and get lucky.

getting lucky is always the hard part. I've always tried anticipating what the next in thing is going to be and get a head start but it never worked with the exception of dubstep, I called it right on the money but it's not something I'd do.

Sorry if I may be misrepresenting your intent Joel, but I don't see why writing something catchy and honing your craft are incompatible. I do agree that getting luck, given the odds, is very important.

They are not incompatible at all. For instance: Sir Paul McCartney. That said there are a lot of poseurs with little actual musical skill who have massive hits. For instance: Kanye West. That is all I meant.

That is all I meant. Gotcha. When I lived in Nashville, I used go to various places to listen to Don Henry. He had this song as part of his repertoire, which he always claimed was a true story, about how he and his friends would be playing out their new songs and continually had to listen to this awful tune by this awful performer. Then, one day the guy and the song got recorded and it became a huge hit. It's a strange business.

If you're good enough you can make it once your following gets big enough. Dream Theater never got commercial air play, they're just that good.
