Hi,
This is my first post here! Im currently on the hunt for a 500 series FET compressor for mobile tracking duties. A quick Google search brought up these options; Lindell 7x500, The Don U76, Hairball FET/500 and JLM FC500. Some of these are DIY kits, Which I don't mind as long they are beginner friendly!
I'm looking for something with a bit of colour and that distorts nicely when pushed. Are there any in the list above that's best to avoid?

Wow! Looks super interesting. I really like the Capi preamps. Can't wait to hear it in action.

The GR PWM 501 is my favorite 500 series single slot comp to date. Do put that on your list to try out!

The Don gets a lot of love. So does Serpent. I'd put my money on jsteiger and CAPI if I were going 500 compression though.

It is a great sounding unit. Ran it through some paces on male vox, where he can get a little zingy. Was just the ticket... tamed the zing and thickened it up all in one shot. Doing about 3 - 6 dB reduction. I need to do a side by side comparison, but my CLA-76 might not get any use anymore.

I love my Sound Skulptor cp5176 but I can't wait for the new Capi comps.

The new CAPI looks fantastic! Is there a direct link to it on the CAPI site yet?

I'm sure jeff's 526 will be hard to beat. We'll have to wait a bit for them, though. I'm mixing right now (taking a well deserved break!) and hairball's rev a 1176 (fet500) is amazing on lead vocals. Good old 10 and 2 puts them where they ought to be.

To echo cowboy - the Serpent 4001 (SSL style) and Chimera (not FET, but a KILLER LA3A style comp) are great. if you can find a Splice, it is quite possibly the best comp out there in 500 land - at least in the 1176 vein. Not many made though....

I should update this thread...These CAPI FC526's are my absolute go-to's now. What the 1176 was trying to be. Fantastic tracking compressor that sounds like there's a little Volume Monkey inside.

I have been compressing and distorting some tracks with the Radial Komit today. It is as easy to use as it gets and distorts like what the original post asked for. I am gonna be buying an Empress EMC-519 500 comp soon and will report on that one in the review section when I get it.
